Inflation doesn't seem to have hit the SDCC Ebay badge sale

 28 JUNE 2023

CCI has released a select number of badges on Ebay - and the bidding is about what you'd expect. Remember that each sale includes 2 Preview Night badges, so paying $1000-1500 per auction really isn't that bad - more than double the normal price, sure, but you're not dealing with some shady reseller or scalper and the proceeds go to a good cause. That good cause being the Comic-Con Museum.

A few facts:

  • You can't win this and then turn in your current badges for a refund.

  • You can win an auction and then assign the badges to whoever you want, as long as they set up a Member ID account. This makes this a nice option for a family where only some siblings got a badge last fall, or someone who has a new girlfriend/boyfriend or parents who'd love to give their kid a killer graduation present.

  • On that note, you're allowed to win multiple auctions. So if you're untouched by the ravages of inflation and this unfriendly economy - have at it.

We're just a week out from the official schedule posting. Exciting, right? I feel like next week will be the pivotal moment - well, four days - when people decide exactly how they feel about San Diego Comic-Con 2023.

Open Registration is here

 5 NOVEMBER 2022

10:17 am

It's over. In the end, the sale wasn't slow at all - it just was competitive. Or rather, it was divided between people who knew how to game the system and people who didn't.

I'm sure CCI put a lot of time and money into this new system, but it's not fair nor effective, in my opinion. It needs to be 1 Member ID for 1 waiting room session and that's it. This should be doable so I don't know why it's not designed that way.

If you didn't get a badge today, I do know how devastating that is. Please look into other Cons like NYCC, Emerald City, Dragon Con, etc. San Diego has a classic grandeur, it's true, and I know it would be emotionally difficult for me to miss it. But there are other Cons and they have a lot to offer.

9:51 am

I thought this sale was running slow - but it actually isn't, not that slow. It's just a lot of people in the waiting room.  The end of PN, Saturday and Friday aren't that different from other Open Reg sales.

9:47 am

Okay, this is officially a very competitive sale. Yes, Open Reg always is, but basing my numbers against former years - this is tough.

And to make it even more bittersweet, I got in just before Preview Night sold out - but the 3 first-timers I bought for only wanted 2 days. It killed me to leave Preview Night on the shelf.

9:16 am

Nearly everyone I know is stuck in "more than an hour" land. Tough sale.

8:25 am

What can we expect today? A raucous, brutal competition? More tech snafus? I don't know! But it'll probably be typical in that many of us won't get the days we want or won't get a badge at all.

If you do run into trouble, remember to screenshot everything and stay calm. And don't try any shenanigans, as CCI has proved their detectives are onto you.

Good luck!

Will Open Registration go more smoothly? Will you commit "waiting room shenanigans?"

 04 NOVEMBER 2022

What is with SDCC23? First a bunch of people got their Marriott rooms cancelled; now some people have been notified their hard-won badges have been revoked. Others found out that the Preview Night waiting list wasn't a thing, despite being invited to sign up for it. What is happening? Haven't we all suffered enough going 2 years without a Comic-Con?

Open Registration is tomorrow - and it will likely be a bloodbath as always. But first let's talk about the scandal of the week: the "refunded emails" and CCI's ominous warning that "if we detect that a participant has shared their waiting room information or URL, they will be removed from the registration queue and any transactions linked to it will be canceled immediately."

Or as they refer to it, "waiting room shenanigans."

How to Avoid Cheating

If you're doing the sale tomorrow, read this lest you accidentally commit a CCI felony and lose your badge.

First of all: I agree with not cheating. But I think the onus is on CCI to create a badge sale experience that doesn't allow for it. This new process is full of weird loopholes and if some people exploited them - well, how did they not see it coming? This is a population that sleeps outside for days just to attend a 50-minute panel and obsesses all year about a 4 day conference. The high demand for an SDCC badge ensures that those who obtain them are highly driven, often emotional, and usually cunning. Of course some people were going to cheat once they figured out they could!

So here's what happened, as I understand it. Some wily people copied their badge session URL (not the link that got you into the waiting room) to help others jump the line. Let's say my walking man is predicted to go live in 2 minutes while yours says 29 minutes. I can copy my link, send it to you, and voila, now you're about to go live in 2 minutes too. I don't know if this will still be possible tomorrow but regardless, you shouldn't do it even if you can, because it will mean losing your badge.

(I could be explaining it wrong, so please explain the real situation in the comments if you know.)

Those who did this have had their badges refunded. As in cancelled. I'm guessing CCI's IT team/vendor was able to detect URL dupes and identify the cheaters. They're still eligible for Open Registration. But I do feel bad for those who didn't know they were cheating. That includes buying group members who had no idea what their buyer did, and people who accidentally shut down their waiting room session and asked a friend to quickly shoot them their URL. I'm sure some people were in this boat and just assumed they'd randomly be added in.

Well, now we know: don't do this tomorrow.

How bad will Open Registration be?

I don't know, but Returning Registration seemed pretty generous overall. I just didn't see as many people groaning over their bad luck as usual. Does that mean fewer badges in play tomorrow? Will demand be lower? I'm helping 3 first-timer teenagers tomorrow and I have zero guesses as to what they'll get.

If you didn't partake in Returning Registration, you should definitely study CCI's badge sale guides. Yes, even if you've done a badge sale before. It's different this time. I'd say the biggest confusion came from the fact that you picked your days with Preview Night in a separate area (lots of frantic people asking "Is Preview Night already gone?") and even if you rode in on your Member ID and saw your information, you could still buy for 3 other people and not yourself. That also threw off a lot of people.

Another question - if I buy your badge, and we both have our credit card information in our profiles, who gets billed? I do, as it turns out.

And there are other common questions - so really, do read the instructions, don't commit fraud, and stay calm if something confuses you during the sale. You've got time, so just pop into Twitter or another forum and ask - someone will answer.

Good luck!

Are you ready for Returning Registration?

 14 OCTOBER 2022

Our first SDCC badge sale in 3 years is here! And to commemorate the occasion, we have a new process process and confusing changes.  Here are a few last-minute things to review.

Timing

If you've done a lot of badge sales, you may have an approximate mental timetable of when Preview Night badges sell out, when Saturday sells out, and so on. Tomorrow none of that applies. CCI has estimated the sale could be about 50% slower. If that's true, a lot of us will work ourselves into a frenzy thinking we're not getting picked for anything. So keep this in mind.

FWIW, Special Edition did move slower - but I didn't think it was 50% slower. I really don't know what to predict for tomorrow.

You will get a time estimation to help you understand your place in line. Don't give up if your ETA looks dismal. Even if badges are selling out, hang in there. During Special Edition, people were wailing on Twitter about how they might as well just end their session - and in the end, everyone got a badge who wanted one.

Your Member ID Account

If you're one of those people that never bothered to update your password after the system change last year - but still received your badge and went to Comic-Con this summer - go reset your password now.

Make sure to upload your credit card number as well.

Your Devices

In previous years, CCI would say not to use your phone or iPad and people would anyhow. That's really inadvisable this time, apparently. Check their tech tips to make sure you're aligned with the process.

The Waiting Room

This year, no codes are needed. CCI has instructed us to access the waiting room from our Member ID accounts. But yesterday's email said we can also just click this link. I expect you'll have to enter your Member ID and password to go in that way. You can't just open a dozen browsers to multiple your waiting room presence - I don't think.

The Competition

Unlike previous Returning Registrations, we have 2 pools of combatants: SDCC 2022 attendees and 2021 Special Edition attendees. It's safe to say that Venn Diagram is almost just one circle - almost. There are definitely people who went to Special Edition that didn't have a 2022 badge.

There's also the weirdness of this: "To manage traffic on the day of the sale, technically anyone who logs in to their Member ID account around that time will enter a virtual waiting room. However, only those who are eligible for Returning Registration will be placed into the randomized queue for the badge sale. Ineligible members in the waiting room will be returned to their Account Dashboard once traffic slows down." What??? Why is this even a thing?

Let's hope that works as CCI planned.

Your Buying Group

The actual process looks a little different from last time - so be sure to look at the visuals they provided.  You can still buy for 3 people (including yourself) but there's a different tab to register other Member IDs. Even if you're an old SDCC veteran, I really advise familiarizing yourself with the screen now.

All in all, I don't think there's any reason for panic. I'll live blog the badge sale. Till tomorrow!

CCI offers badge sale advice

 11 OCTOBER 2022

CCI offered up some badge sale advice today - and unlike yesteryear badge sales, when you pretty much knew what they would say, some of it is worth studying.

The main two points I'd emphasize:

Check your password. Definitely do this. It's not just a precaution - my password didn't work last year and I had to get it reset.

Put in your credit card information now. I also rank this as a "definitely," even if you're worried about cybercriminals. It's worth having one less thing to worry about and slow you down during the badge sale.  Yes, you have 15 minutes to complete it but you can easily lose some of those minutes if someone's Member ID is wrong on your spreadsheet or if you have a question about which days someone wants.

Everything else - testing browsers, not refreshing - is as you'd expect.

Almost here!

Returning Registration is October 15

 OCTOBER 4

As predicted, the winds of autumn have carried in Returning Registration. I know there's been a lot of chatter on what an upheaval system changes will cause, but I don't think there's any reason to be anxious. Let's review.

  • Returning Registration badge sale is October 15. Saturday morning, same time, same bat channel.
  • Or rather, not the same channel. This year, as CCI charmingly put it, "the badge sale will take place in your Member ID account." I would reword that to say that you will access the badge sale from your Member ID account.
  • You'll still join a waiting room between 8-9 am PST and wait for the badge sale to begin at 9.
  • If this aligns with the Special Edition badge sale, you won't have a spinning blue circle, you will have an ETA, and the sale will move a little slower than previous sales. Those last 2 are important. Don't reach for the hemlock if your ETA looks bleak - and don't try to predict sell-out times based on when Preview Night and Saturday badges used to sell out. Just hang in there and see it through.
  • Don't worry about the sale crashing. I'm not saying it won't. But approaching this like we're all walking into a teetering ruin in a tornado just intensifies an already stressful day. Let's give some CCI some credit; they've had years to upgrade systems since our last badge sale. (They've definitely hired some skilled staff in other areas.) So let's just hope for the best - and it crashes, well, it will feel like old times.
  • Test out your tech as they recommend. Again, it's been years (unless you did Special Edition) so just run through and make sure your computer is friends with their systems.
  • Note that you still aren't supposed to use tablets and phones, and you still can't Paypal, GPay, etc. Just good ole Visa, Mastercard, and Amex.
  • I can't remember what the last full badge price was, but it's now $330. So if you buy for 3 people, be prepared to sell out $1K up front.

CCI promised to provide "visual step-by-step instructions," the study of which I think is advisable for everyone. So keep an eye out for their next update - and in the meantime, lock down your buying group details.

Think positive!

Returning Registration is almost here.... probably

 11 SEPTEMBER 2022

It's been not quite 3 years since our last Returning Registration badge sale: 12 October, 2019. We were told at this year's SDCC to expect another autumn badge sale. So while it might seem too soon to be thinking about SDCC 2023, we're probably only weeks away.

I am really hoping it isn't the 2nd Saturday in October again since I will be pre-Halloweening in Salem and devoid of my home turf tech cave. But if it is - or falls any time before November - now is the time to put on your badge sale mastermind hat. It's been 3 years; your hat is probably a little rusty. I know mine is.

A few things to think about:

  • The general badge sale process. If you didn't do the Special Edition badge sale last year, it was almost identical to a normal sale. The main differences were the absence of the spinning blue circle (I can't remember if the dad jokes were there) and its slower pace, as spelled out by the estimated wait times. While everyone ended up getting a badge without a problem, the leisurely crawl freaked a lot of people out at first, who were convinced they weren't going to get one based on previous badge sale paces. Will Returning Registration be the same? I think it will differ slightly from our last Ret Reg, but the general process will mostly be what we remember.

  • Your buying group. The last 3 years turned a lot of buying groups into 52 pickup, with groups dissolving, merging with others, or just falling into silence. I think this is especially true for groups that are online only. If you're real-life friends with other SDCC attendees, you're probably in good shape. But if you lost touch with your online community, you might be feeling a bit fragmented right now. If that's you, start putting yourself out there as an orphan in need of a home.

  • Your money. God knows inflation is ripping through all of our lives like a scythe right now. If you're struggling financially, don't get caught by surprise when the badge sale is announced - start putting aside $$$ right now. Also figure out if you can pay for 3 badges during the badge sale - because if you can't, you won't be much use to your buying group.

  • Your hotel room. Don't be fooled by how plentiful the rooms were this year. (And they were, comparatively speaking - maybe not right off the bat but persistent people were able to get downtown rooms through the waiting list more easily this year.) There's every reason to think next year will be ugly again. Do what you can to get a fallback room, but be aware there's already been upheaval in that area; some people who booked Marriott rooms (Courtyard, Residence Inn, etc) for next summer had their rooms canceled. Brutal! If you have a safety room at the Horton like me, our rooms look safe... for now. Of course, there's really no telling what the future holds. Are we now in a situation where we need to reserve backups for our backups? Sounds like it.

Hopefully we'll see an announcement in a month or so. Till then!

The Special Edition badge sale is here!

 25 SEPTEMBER 2021

11:53 am

So did everyone get a badge? It seems like it. Even if it hasn't sold out yet, I know local people who normally feel shut out of SDCC will be interested in picking up any badges available. I just texted one of them and he's in.

Congratulations to everyone who got a badge today. I know lots of people are a bit disdainful about this Con. That's their right - but this is definitely going to be a magnificent weekend for those of us who love the idea of a more relaxed, less crowded Con where we can enjoy time with friends.

11:32 am

Okay, I'm going to say not too competitive. I'll be interested to see if everyone gets a badge, most, or just a portion.

11:12 am

I can't tell if the sale is more competitive than I anticipated or just going slow. Or both. Right now, out of a buying group of about 30ish sessions, only 1 has been picked with two under 5 minutes away.

The good news: some people are reporting their wait times dropping really fast. So maybe there's our answer.

11:04 am

What's your estimated wait time??? Don't get discouraged if it's long. Just see it through.

10:36 am

You probably know this but - you have to use a credit card to buy badges. No Paypal, Venmo, GPay, bitcoin, etc. Just a reminder!

10:24 am

After eons of Comic-Con inertia, a real, bonafide SDCC badge sale is here! So far several signs point favorably in our direction - a too-easy hotel booking process, a lack of interest in almost everyone I know. And a few signs point the other way too - limited attendance, a messy pro badge sale.

But overall, today shouldn't be as nerve-wracking as a normal badge sale. The stakes are lower, for one thing. I'm excited for Special Edition, but should I not be able to go, I won't be devastated like I would with a normal SDCC. And hey, no spinning blue circle.

Good luck. I'll live blog the sale as much as I can.

Badge sale links, vax cards, and other considerations

 22 SEPTEMBER 2021

Happy Fall Equinox! CCI delivered its own harvest today in the form of badge sale links! These are going to play a huge role in everyone's fate, so let's talk about that right off. We've been waiting to see which of 2 possibilities was true:

  1. Everyone gets a generic link, which they and every colleague, family member and friend paste into a zillion browsers.
  2. Everyone gets a unique link, workable for one entry into the badge sale waiting room.

Now that we have our links (check your email and your Member ID account), what's the verdict? At a glance, the links are labelled the same. But in my group, the links point to different targets. And it makes sense they'd be unique, because CCI has promised that if we get ejected from the badge sale, we can just click our links and go right back to our spot in the waiting room. It also makes sense because CCI does not want to crash their badge sale with an astronomical number of entries. That said, we'll see on Saturday how it all plays out.

Onto other business.

Once again, review the different screens. The badge sale process has changed slightly. In my conversations over the last week, I am amazed at how many people did not realize this, or notice we were losing registration codes. Look, if there's one thing I've learned over the years - never take CCI for granted. They will always throw a monkey wrench into your assumptions when you least expect it.

Also - please log into your Member ID account pronto and make sure everything's working and accurate. I got locked out of mine, had to request a new password which didn't work, had to contact support, etc. The trouble started because of a weird nonsensical message that came up as soon as I typed in my Member ID name. Who knows what gremlins were at work there - but I'd make sure your information looks good, even though you have the link in your email.

There were also some troubles with the professional badge sale, which is another reason to play it safe.

Let's talk vaccines and testing.

I know this upsets many people, but you do need to be vaxxed or have a negative COVID-19 test result in the last 3 days. That's vaxxed as in fully vaccinated - 14 days from the last shot. If your last shot is 5 days before the Con, you'll need a negative test as well. You can do the math here; counting back two weeks from November 26, and a month between shots for that, you can see that you need to get vaccinated pretty damn quick.

Vaccination proof needs to be directly from the healthcare provider that vaccinated you and it needs to be on your phone or a physical copy. My own vaccine card looks super sketchy - it's handwritten and the clinic I went to has a bizarre, non-healthcare-sounding name, so I'm going to try to get something digital as proof. Consider doing the same for the sake of expediency. And yes, you'll need to show government-issued ID with a matching name.

For negative tests, they can be PCR or antigen, but they must be done by a certified lab, clinic or physician. In other words - your home test from Amazon won't cut it.

And yes, you'll be masked, even if it conflicts with your cosplay. If you're anti-mask or anti-vax, this is not the place for you. You need to provide your own masks - but you know vendors are going to be selling the most fun masks ever, so there's that.

Badges won't be shipped out - we'll have to pick them up.

This sounds burdensome, I can't lie. It'll happen in Halls G and H (see, you ARE getting into Hall H for once!) and it'll also involve the vax/test checking and ugh, I'm having flashbacks to the days of waiting in line for hours to get my badge. I'm hoping they open up on Thanksgiving night and let us come in and get situated - otherwise many of us will miss half of Friday.

This won't be "the large gathering reflective of the summer event."

Yeah, we know. There will be reduced attendance for a more "intimate gathering" - and something called Fannish Friday Shopping for Black Friday. All of this sounds like heaven to me. But I've never been into the gargantuan pageantry some attendees look for. If you crave long Hall H campouts and snapping selfies in huge outdoor activations, maybe this isn't for you. Those of us who fondly recall the old, more laidback, days will probably be smitten with this Con.

But we will get the Comic-Con Museum opening!

A "limited opening" will happen on Friday, 26 November, with the grand opening scheduled for next July. I'll go if I can, but "limited" in this case sounds extremely limited.

So there's where we are. I'll admit I'm surprised by how many people are blowing this event off, but hey, more badges for the rest of us. To me, this is about seeing friends, blowing money, enjoying some offbeat panels, and luxuriating in that convention center feeling. And of course, supporting CCI.

Good luck! I'll live blog the sale like always. I'm guessing it will go quite fast unless a storm brews up like with professional registration.

The Special Edition badge sale will be Sept. 25

 16 SEPTEMBER 2021

                                        from comic-con.org/ccse/purchase-instructions

And we're back in the saddle! It's the news we've been waiting for: an SDCC badge sale is right around the corner. Yes, technically this is for Special Edition. But it's a Comic-Con, it's in San Diego, it will feature high demand for limited badges - so it's an SDCC badge sale in my eyes.

During our long hiatus, CCI apparently had time to tinker with its badge sale buying process - and a lot has changed. Even if you're planning to skip Special Edition, you probably will want to read this.

Here are the two most impactful changes:

  • You won't need a registration code for this badge sale, just a Member ID. Which means that instead of having one waiting room session per code, people will be able to have a jillion browsers open just for themselves. I don't like this change. I'm hoping you need your Member ID to actually get into the waiting room, but it doesn't sound like it.
  • Everyone who goes to Special Edition will be eligible for Returning Registration for 2023. I dislike this change as well. Either it's in addition to we 2022 badge-holders, which increases the number of us in the 2023 mix, or it replaces us (unlikely.) Granted, the Venn Diagram of 2022 badge holders and Special Edition attendees probably looks pretty tight - so hopefully this won't affect us too greatly. But I had a very petty reaction when I first saw it.

Let's talk about demand vs. supply

If you tracked the NYCC badge sale, which was easy like Sunday morning, you might predict that demand for Special Edition won't be intense as for a normal SDCC sale. Sorry, I just don't believe that. Even if it's fewer people in the mix, there will still be more combatants than winners. The Thanksgiving factor will eliminate some farflung fans - but there are plenty of locals who can still feast with their families and roll into Comic-Con on Friday. And plenty of people like me (and a lot of others I've talked to) who are excited to jettison our families and enjoy Friendsgiving with nerd friends on Comic-Con Eve.

Now - it definitely is different, the aura surrounding this Con. For instance, I effortlessly booked a fully refundable safety room at the Horton for $249/night. Plenty of other downtown hotels like Hotel Z had availability too as of today. I'm guessing that indicates most nerds didn't realize Special Edition was happening and that perhaps their Con skills atrophied a little.

The actual badge buying process is different

For the better? The worse? I haven't studied it closely enough to have an opinion. But it's something we all need to review. CCI put together an instruction page with diagrams - and really all that matters is you can still buy for 3 people and they all still need to have Member IDs.

CCI is tired of our buying group drama

This advice is gold: "It is critical that you only work with a well-organized buying group. Buying groups can be helpful, but we've seen an increasing number of people get shut out due to disorganized efforts. If your Member ID has been used by another participant, you’ll receive an error message if there is an attempt to use it again."

*raises hand* A few years back, I was managing like 8 sessions for people, which I tracked through little maps so I knew whose code/session got picked and bought accordingly. One of those sessions got picked but bombed out, cancelling the sale. I was able to contact CCI and tell them exactly whose code/badge was robbed. Did they give them a badge? No. They had to wait for Open Reg. But at least I knew who it was - and I've seen people manage so many waiting rooms that they completely lose track of the process. I've seen people stop speaking to someone who claims to have bought their badge, taking them off the list, only to be mistaken. Etc. You've probably seen the same disasters. So I can't even imagine the kind of frantic emails and calls CCI has to deal with on our behalf.

And the badge sale details are...

Date: September 25

Time: "shortly after" 11 a.m. PST

Where to find the link: in your Member profile, as well as an email arriving within 48 hours of the sale

Price: $150 for three days of sheer splendor - no single day badges, sorry

Since it's been a while, now is the time to visit your Member ID account, make sure your details are correct, and that you're ready for battle. Prod your more sluggish friends to do the same. It's been a while since we've done this, and I've seen many people deteriorate - socially, mentally, physically - over the pandemic. Make sure your comrades are in fighting shape for this, especially since the process is slightly different.

Stay tuned!

SDCC updates: Refunds, badge sales & online Cons

10 MAY 2020

Happy Mother's Day! We're at a point where most of us have emotionally accepted the deletion of San Diego Comic-Con from our summers. Now that it's May, and we're entering the traditional season of watching for announcements and lusting for exclusives, that absence is beginning to feel painful. Maybe that's why there is still so much fervid talk about Comic-Con - buying groups, badges, hotels, fond memories of SDCCs past. As Marx (probably) says in the afterlife, Comic-Con is the opiate of the masses.

So let's talk about a few developments.

Refunds
I have been involved in 2 badge refunds so far (neither my own) and both were easy to request and quick to be paid out. As in, the quickest I've ever seen CCI act in regard to anything. However, you will need the Member ID of both the attendee and whoever bought their badge so prepare for that when you make your request.

Badge Sales for 2021
Some rumors and misinformation are circulating online, namely that Open Reg has been cancelled for 2021. Fact time: CCI has stated "There will be no Returning Registration for Comic-Con 2021." That's logical, since there will be no 2020 Con for anyone to return from. Anyone with a 2020 badge is already locked in for 2021 if they want to be.

But Open Registration? No official announcement has been made. CCI did say, "Depending on the number of refund requests received, there may be reduced inventory for sale in the fall of 2020." No kidding. But they did not officially cancel Open Reg yet. There's still 51 days to go for attendees to request refunds and many people could be driven to do so by financial despair - but probably, few refunds will be requested. SDCC attendees, even broke and unemployed ones, know to hang onto any existing badge for dear life. So maybe if there's not enough room for Open Reg, CCI will auction off packages (hotel and badge, as they've done before), hold contests or choose some other route. Regardless, let's wait for CCI to announce their plans when they're ready.

If you lost out for 2020 and had high hopes for 2021, the news that you may need to wait for SDCC 2022 is probably a bitter pill to swallow. But in a season where we're all swallowing many bitter pills, it helps to remember there will be other Cons you can go to over the next 2 years.

Comic-Con at Home
You may have seen CCI's pithy little video announcing no lines, comfortable chairs, free parking - i.e., an online version of SDCC 2020. We don't know what it will involve yet. It's a fair guess that some of the content (celebrity interviews, panels) will be interesting and some not so much, and the final sum won't be much like the real thing.

But I hope everyone still checks it out to see if there's some way they can support a favorite vendor/artist or connect with their fandom. As attendees, we're saving money by staying home - but the other side of fence is taking a financial hit. You won't be spending $$$ on hotels or restaurants, so consider getting yourself an expensive exclusive, back issue, print or other treasure. You can indulge yourself a bit with new toys while helping creators stay in a position where they can make more great stuff. Obviously this is if you can afford to do so.

CCI is also serving up Comic-Con Museum at Home, promising videos and downloadable content for all ages. If you haven't done much with the Museum so far, take a look.

Hope you're all keeping your spirits up and staying connected with your nerd brethren. We're at a stage where our pandemic experiences are beginning to differ. Some of us are employed, some aren't, some are recovering from illness, some have a positive antibody test, and some are hiding out. Some are scared witless and some think this is all a conspiracy. (There's going to be a COVID-19 graphic novel anthology with all our different stories covered, right? Right?) Whatever you're thinking and however you're coping, I hope you're still finding ways to escape into the magic of your favorite nerd world. Be safe and one day we'll walk back into Comic-Con.

It's time to spin the Nerd Wheel of Fate: SDCC Open Registration is here

16 NOVEMBER 2019

10:17 am

So that was a pretty balanced badge sale, I feel. Patterns I noticed:
  • People who did well in Returning Registration did not do well in Open Reg. I'm in this category, although I did get picked while there were still Thursday/Sunday badges live.
  • A decent number of first-timers scored good badges. While this may not feel positive for those of you who got nothing, it's fun to add new blood to the community and see SDCC through fresh eyes.
  • Preview Night seemed harder to get than ever. If you really wanted it and didn't get it, remember that recent Preview Nights have featured amazing offsites like ScareDiego. You'll find plenty to do.
  • People seem less dismayed about getting Thursday/Sunday. I attribute this to the greater interest in offsites - attendees know they'll stay entertained in or out of the convention center. And veterans know that taking a break mid-Con can save their sanity (and their feet.)
  • But overall, an SDCC badge sale is a tough challenge and you really can't count on a victory.

If you didn't get a badge today, you may feel pretty miserable. Give yourself a few days to lick your wounds, then start making Plan B. Emerald City STILL has all 4 days available. New York Comic Con is attainable (mostly) and just as big and fun as SDCC. Dragon Con is a great alternate for a summer Con. You have lots of options so don't be myopic and think SDCC is the only show in town. It's not.

If you just got your first SDCC badge today - congratulations. The hotel sale is still months away so all you need to do right now is learn about the Con and make some friends. Visit digital communities like the blogs, Friends of Comic-Con, etc. and ask all the questions you want - someone will help. But also read up on available resources because you can learn a lot that will help you get the most out of your Con. Yes, just being there is fun but it can also be chaotic - so figuring out the lay of the land in advance will help you have a great time.

It's only the middle of November.  Whether today was good or bad for you, we're a long way from SDCC - so I hope you have a beautifully nerdy winter.

9:26 am

Tough sale for me and everyone who's checked in with me. Not one of us out of at least 30 sessions has gotten picked. Brutal!

How are you faring?

9:01 am

And we're on. CCI has dedicated this badge sale to late president John Rogers, which is very sweet.

8:23 am PST

It ends today - your uncertainty as to whether you'll attend SDCC 2020. Remember when we thought 2020 would mean a massively expanded convention center and enough badges for everyone? Obviously that didn't happen. Which means we're still battling as fierce odds as ever.

A few last minute tips - stay in the game to the bitter end. Even if you're watching all badge types sell out and you are outraged at the idea of you, an A-level elite nerd, possessing merely a Sunday badge - just grab it. Make a weekend out of it, do the offsites, and then swing back into Return Registration next fall for a victory march. Also important: if you're working with a group, don't bail just because you secured your badge. Stay in and see if you get picked so you can help out your mates.

Finally, screenshot everything if you have a problem. CCI is pretty reasonable if you can prove you were a victim of a glitch. And double finally - pay people quickly if they buy you a badge. Don't take advantage of our little community's goodwill, because it's one of the nicest things about SDCC.

Regardless of how things pan out for you today - please remember there is always another Con. San Diego Comic-Con can be magical but it can also be frustrating, expensive, humid and tedious. If you don't get a badge today, it's natural to feel devastated. But please remember there are other great Cons you can go to.

That said - good luck. I'll post what I hear.

Prepping for SDCC Open Reg

13 NOVEMBER 2019

Open Registration - your last chance to attend San Diego Comic-Con 2020 - is this weekend. Some of you may be prepared; many of you probably aren't. I say that based on the number of people (okay, not that many, but a few) who contacted me in the middle of Returning Reg to ask if I could get them a badge. And these were existing attendees who should know better!

If you don't know better, you're not reading this - because those people manage their Comic-Con life in a haphazard manner. But if you're still new to SDCC and maybe navigating your first badge sale without an experienced guide, you might want to review these tips:

  • Be prepared to not get a badge. Go in with an attitude that it's nice if you get one, okay if you don't. There are other Cons. Try to make yourself believe it. Because Open Reg is brutal.

  • Follow the instructions. There's no wiggle room in terms of late entries to the waiting room or trying to use a registration code twice. If you haven't already, test your tech. Have a good credit card on hand. Use a real laptop in a stable location instead of trying to do this on your phone in a parking lot. And let your household members know that you are entering a pressure cooker of an hour where you're liable to snap if they try to bother you.

  • If you do get picked during the sale, calm down and take your time. Even laidback people get flustered during an SDCC badge sale. The last thing you want to do is pick the wrong days or forget to include someone - so don't rush. That said, don't waste too much time trying to track someone down because their Member ID isn't working. At some point, move on.

  • If you get in toward the end of the sale and discover that only Thursday/Sunday or just Sunday are left - grab them and check out. You can debate the merits of those days with yourself later. Personally I believe they are well worth it, especially for first-timers looking for a toehold in the SDCC ecosystem. But if you decide otherwise, you can always turn them in.

  • Finally, if you don't receive an email with a registration code - check your Member ID account. It should be there with the link.

My own badge is squared away, but I will be in the sale to help others - and I'll live-blog the sale as always. Good luck.

Today is the ECCC badge sale

23 OCTOBER 2019

1:09 pm

4 day tickets are sold out.

12:58 pm

Celebrity and Comic Fan Premium Packages are sold out - 4 day are still available.

12:16 pm

And it's over for me. How about you?

Word of caution: when you confirm your tickets, there is a teeny little link to book your hotel. Don't miss it.

12:02 pm

We're in the queue....

10:23 a.m.
It's a special day for PNW nerds - the day when the (digital) gates to Emerald City Comic Con open and we lock down our badges.

If you're an ECCC veteran, remember that you can choose from premium packages this year; if you're new to ECCC and/or ReedPop, be aware that you can book your hotel at the same time. Also be aware that your odds of getting a full badge are good only if you get into the queue on time. This isn't as nuts as an SDCC badge or hotel sale, but it's still competitive.

I'll be in the sale with you and I'll post what I hear and see.

Will we have 2 ECCC badge sales next year?

21 OCTOBER 2019

This Wednesday, 23 October at noon PST, tickets and hotels for Emerald City Comic Con go live. In some ways, this ticket sale will be exactly what you're used to. You can buy a 4-day package for $145 or buy each day separately for slightly more.

But - plot twist! This year, ECCC has come out with "premium packages" for the dedicated fan who also has a little extra cash to burn. While these packages are intriguing in themselves, what really interests me is that each promises "Access to 2021 Advanced Ticket Presale." That's explained further as "2020 Premium badge holders will have first access to ECCC 2021 tickets Cost." (No typos - that's exactly what it says.)

In other words, much like NYCC, we're apparently looking at two ECCC badge sales next year - but instead of dividing between last year's attendees and the general public, it will be between premium attendees and the rest of us. Yes, just when you decide you really don't need a fancy overpriced premium ticket, you realize you probably will need to buy one if you want to lock down 2021. Tricky, tricky, ReedPop.

These packages include:
  • Celebrity Fan - $299: private lounge at the Hyatt, reserved seating for 2 Main Stage panels, fast pass for photo ops and autographs, various merch.
  • Comic Fan - $275: private lounge by Artists' Alley, early access to the floor, advance access to guests, various merch.
  • Family - $350: good for 2 adults and 4 kids. Again, access to a private family lounge, food vouchers, some early access, merch discounts.
I don't know how I feel about this. I fully support premium packages that offer perks like reserved seating. The idea that I'm handicapped for next year's badge sale unless I pony up is annoying. I don't really care about private lounges and I'm long past the race-for-the-floor stage. So while I initially decided to roll out for the Comic Fan package, doubts are beginning to creep in. I'm curious how others feel about it?

If you're on the fence for the entire show, remember that Lyte is there to relieve you of your tickets, should life interfere. Tragically, this was me last year - and Lyte made the whole process very easy. Presumably it's just as easy to await tickets for sale as well. So if you find yourself on either end of that exchange, whether you can't go or you didn't buy tickets in time, you should be fine.

That said, don't bank on tickets being turned in. If you really want to be at Emerald City in March, be in that queue on Wednesday. Badges will go very quickly. Make sure you lock down your hotel room as well.

I'll live blog the sale Wednesday, with an eye on which tickets sell out first, the general or premium.  Stay tuned.

Returning Reg is happening

12 OCTOBER 2019

9:54 am

Well. That was one of the smoothest badge sales ever. I worked with a small local group this year and we did quite well. My ancient (but badge sale-lucky) laptop that wheezes like an old man died at 8:53 a.m.. Ominous, but I was able to adapt and I got a Preview Night badge faster than I could believe. Then it seemed like nothing happened for a while. People were saying badges must be going slowly... but ultimately it didn't seem radically off from previous years. Someone in my group was able to buy all 4 days at 9:40 am, right before Saturday sold out, apparently. If you remember the horror show days where people regularly got booted out of the system or the whole shebang would crash, you have to admit CCI is running a decent operation now.

Most everyone I spoke to online/texted got badges but there were a few sad nerds today. If that's you, buck up and do what you have to do to prevail in Open Reg - which probably isn't far away.

How did your morning go?

8:24 am

The day we've been waiting for is here! Hope you are not sleep deprived and over caffeinated like I am, and you're approaching this with some semblance of calm and perspective. But probably you're just as anxious as everyone else.

Problems so far: nothing terrible that I've heard, other than a resolved issue with getting kicked out of the waiting room. I'll keep posting what I hear. Share what's happening to you!

Are you ready, steady?

SDCC badge sale refresher

9 OCTOBER 2019

San Diego Comic-Con Returning Registration is just 2 days away. Are you ready? Are you nervous? Have you already practiced all the steps several times in your mind?

You probably don't need to; SDCC badge sales have been pretty consistent for years now. But if somehow other people have bought your badges for you and this is your first time at the wheel - let's review.

How it works

1) On Saturday morning, you'll click the link you got in your email from CCI today (which is also in your Member ID account) and input the code that was also in that email/your Member ID account. You want to do this before 9 am PST. A minute late and you won't get into the sale.

2) Once you're in the waiting room, you'll probably nervously text your friends, check Twitter, worry about the flakiest person in your buying group/circle of friends. If you're working with enough people, inevitably someone will experience a dead laptop, hangover or personal crisis that prevents them from participating in the sale. OR you'll have the opposite happen in a bit of luck - someone will send you their code to use since they've decided not to go to SDCC next year.

3) Finally it will be zero hour and the sale will start at 9 a.m. PST. And... not much will happen at first. There will be a spinning blue circle and a yellow bar of CCI's nerd jokes. They'll assure you that people are being moved into random groups. You'll wonder if people are finally buying badges yet. Then you'll see someone crow about getting a Preview Night badge - and at the moment, your real anxiety will begin as you wait to be chosen.

4) Once you're picked for a session, your waiting room will automatically convert to a very intuitive interface that asks your member ID and last name and how many people you're buying for. Do not screw that up. In fact, don't rush at any point through this process. You've got time. Slow down and make sure you input the correct information. The last thing you want is to give up a spot or only get your friend a Sunday badge when Preview Night was available.

5) You'll do the same for the other people you're buying for, inputting their last names and Member IDs and then choosing the days you all want - and doing all of it very carefully. Note: just because it's your code that got you into the waiting room (or someone else's code), that doesn't mean you have to enter the Member ID and last name associated with that code. In fact, if someone else already got you a badge, you can buy for 3 other people when you get picked.

6) At this point, you will advance (after double checking everything) and pay with a credit card. Again, slow down and make sure you enter everything correctly. It's not uncommon for hearts to pound and hands to shake through a badge sale, so try to be calm and focus on being accurate. Errors are common and I know attendees who are carrying grudges to this day because of a friend accidentally costing them a badge years ago.

7) Once you pay, you're done - there's no next stage of booking a hotel like there is with some other Con ticket sales.

Advice

  • Screenshot everything you can. I always send a picture of my final screen with all the names and days on it to whoever I bought for - it's a little piece of reassurance for them until their email confirmation comes in. And screenshots can save you if something doesn't go through.

  • Double check last name and Member ID spellings before the sale - but if you still can't get someone's to validate, check with them and then move on to someone else if they don't respond.  Don't waste a spot because someone flubbed their own information.

  • Even if you're disappointed because you couldn't get Saturday/the whole show, take what you can get. This is Returning Registration; you can try to upgrade in Open Reg. And even if you get "only" a Sunday or Thursday/Sunday, it's still worth it.

  • Test your technology and lock down your funds ahead of time. If you're the first one picked in your buying group, can you afford to buy 3 Preview Night badges on your credit limit? If not, borrow someone else's card.

  • Follow good buying group etiquette - be organized and stay in real time communication to troubleshoot any difficulties and understand everyone's badge status. Pay promptly. Share screenshots. And remember CCI's threat to cancel all badges bought in the same session if 1 of them is sold on the black market. You want to make sure you're working with people you trust.

  • Take your whole weekend into account, especially if you're emotionally invested in this badge sale. (And who isn't?) Don't descend into some chemical-fueled wormhole Friday night and then crawl hungover to your laptop on Saturday morning (or wake up hours after Ret Reg is over.) And think about how you'll feel if you don't get a badge. That's always a possibility so carve out some Saturday space where you can afford to marinate in self-pity.

Finally - I know many of us are being orbited by first-timers ready for Open Registration. Make sure they make a Member ID account now. Do not wait. CCI will shut that down without warning. And it's quite likely that Open Reg will be in November, though that's not certain.

I'll be live-blogging the sale like always. Good luck.

SDCC & Emerald City badge sales are nigh

22 SEPTEMBER 2019

Happy Autumn Equinox. The past week brought welcome nerd news. The Emerald City Comic Con ticket sale is 23 October and the San Diego Comic-Con Returning Registration sale is... soon.

Emerald City
Let's start with ECCC. I advise making 2020 your first year at ECCC if you've never been and you like comic books. You can read why here.

As for the ticket sale - it's a fairly simple process. When tickets go live on noon PST 23 October, you will join the queue and buy the tickets of your choice. While 4-day tickets will probably sell out in real time, you should be able to buy all four days separately if you're there in the mix. You can also book your hotel right then, which I highly advise.

For now, subscribe to their newsletter. And think big picture about your Con destinations in 2020 - because unless you have unlimited leisure time and unlimited funds at your disposal, you'll need to pick which Cons to prioritize. Don't be afraid to mix it up.

San Diego Comic-Con

Onto SDCC. Returning Registration is approaching - a day that rivals an ancient Pagan celebration in its capacity to inspire dread and jubilation. This sale is only for attendees who swiped their badge at SDCC 2019 - also known as SDCC50. (I don't feel that ever really took off, but that's how CCI wants us to think of it.) Since you've already been through a badge sale, you know the drill. Just remember to get your money in order and communicate clearly with your buying group. Last year's RR was the worst I have ever experienced in terms of collecting $$$ from the people whose badges I bought, and it almost turned me off from ever participating in a buying group again. Don't be that person.

Dates: Because this year's junior badge validation emails aligned with last year's, it's tempting to think that Returning Reg this year will also align and take place on Saturday, 12 October.  (Last year was the 13th.) But CCI is a saucy minx, so don't bet the farm on that date. As someone who needed to pick an October weekend for Disneyland, I did choose October 18-20 as safe dates to have the sale over with. I'd guess the 5th at the earliest and say the 12th is the most likely. I'd definitely keep your Saturdays on those 2 dates open. (Hard to do if you're NYCC-bound.) But anything is possible.

For you first-timer hopefuls who want to go to SDCC next year but were not an attendee this summer, you'll need to wait for Open Registration. That's also likely going to happen this fall, so make sure you've created a Member ID for yourself and your companions.

Taking a Gap Year
I want to address those of you who are in the middle - you think you want to go to SDCC 2020 but you're not sure but you don't want to miss out, but but but. There seem to be quite a few attendees contemplating a Comic-Con gap year. Was it because this year was a bit contentious? Are we restless for new lands to conquer? I guess the reason doesn't matter - only that a healthy number of people have mentioned it to me, and they're worried that once they step off the SDCC train they'll never be allowed back on. It's a reasonable fear.

So if you're currently vacillating, remember this:
1) You can always turn your badge in for a refund.
2) If you do jump off the SDCC wheel of fate and can't catch it again - there are other Cons you can go to and fan fests like D23. Also, I feel that we've reached Peak Con in terms of SDCC demand. I could be wildly wrong about this, and obviously it's still very difficult to get a badge. But I do think that even if you flunk a few badge sales, you'll eventually be able to claw your way back in by working with the right people.

Back to what matters. It's officially badge sale season! Prepare for the worst, hope for the best and stay tuned.

Going to San Diego Comic-Con 2020

19 JULY 2019

This might seem like an odd moment to direct your attention to next year - but there's a good reason for it. Two, actually.

If you're kind of new to SDCC but going this year:
  • Note the different hotels so they're not just names on a list, but you know where they are and the restaurants and advantages they contain.
  • Make friends. Look for people in your fandoms but also look for people from your hometown. (Your comic shops, cosplay and fan organizations and local Con will know people as well.) Assemble your SDCC tribe for future badge sales and teamwork.
  • Chat up other attendees and find out what they're excited about. Expand your awareness of Con possibilities and file them away for next year.
  • Figure out what doesn't work for you so you remember to avoid it next year. Maybe you don't need to go all 4 days or maybe you're not suited for major commitment lines. This is good - it frees you up for fresh terrain next year.

If you're brand new and interested in going to Comic-Con next year:
These are the days when complete outsiders watch all the SDCC coverage and decide that they're going next year, goddammit! If this is you, I'm not kidding when I tell you to start preparing now. Open Registration (where you'll try to buy a badge for next summer) could be this fall.

You'll want to:
  • Create a Member ID. You'll need a separate ID for anyone who's going with you. Only people with Member IDs can participate in the badge sales.
  • Get active in the online SDCC community. Study up on all the advice (there's a lot) and talk to veterans who can steer you into actual attendance. Build relationships. Connections make the SDCC world go round.
  • Accept that you may not go to the full 2020 show - and may not go at all. People do get shut out. But if you get even a partial badge, definitely go. You'll find plenty of offsite action on the days you don't have a badge.
  • Investigate a more local Con. Some people think SDCC is the cat's pajamas and that's fine, but it's not the only Con in the world. If you've never been to one, start with a local Con in your neck of the woods.

Good luck! We'll be staring Returning Registration's spinning blue circle in the face before we know it. As Virgil said, time flies, never to be regained - which is why SDCC badges go to those of us who watch the calendar.

Don't forget - the NYCC badge sale is Weds, 12 June

10 JUNE 2019

If you have your eye on New York Comic Con this October, you hopefully have done 2 things by now:

  1. Created a Fan Verification account
  2. Received an email with your link for Wednesday's sale

If you didn't do those things, however, not all is lost. This isn't like SDCC, where you absolutely must have a Member ID assigned to your name and information to get a badge. You just need to find someone who is eligible for the sale - and they can buy you a badge.

It works like this:
  • The person with the Fan Verification account and link gets into the sale, Fortune smiles on them, and they snatch up some tickets.
  • They assign one of those tickets to you with your correct and current email address.
  • You then should - but don't have to - create your own Fan Verification account with that email address. You could skip this step but you shouldn't, especially if you want to be eligible for the 2020 presale.

If you've never done a NYCC sale before, know they are not as hopeless as an SDCC sale - but still pretty tough. Remember that many of the badges are already sold and you're competing for a limited number of remaining badges. That said, yes, you should definitely go even if you don't get the full show. There are many, many surrounding events and you will be more than busy.

Good luck Wednesday. I'll live blog the sale but it should be uneventful.
