Remember, Phoenix Comicon is hiring

25 JANUARY 2017

So in the angry buzzings and mutterings over the Phoenix Comicon decision to adopt a paid volunteer model, this opportunity has been forgotten: new paid jobs. PHXCC sent out a message reminding everyone they're officially hiring, and that jobs will be posted on their site. Right now there's only an "integrated marketing specialist" position advertised, but that will surely change.

Do you want to work for Phoenix Comicon? Better stay on top of their site; they say postings will expire after a week, so be quick about responding.

IT jobs at San Diego Comic-Con

2 JULY 2016

Are you looking for a contract IT job this month? Because Comic-Con needs IT support from 11 July - 25 July. This is a full-time job (albeit temporary) with likely some overtime.

At first you'll work at CCI headquarters "supporting the internal end users with hardware, software, networking issues Tier 2 level. Chat, email, remote and deskside support." Then Comic-Con starts and you'll be working a specific area on the floor where you'll help vendors with their issues - printers, laptops, networking, etc.

For all of this, you will be paid the unprincely sum of... $17 an hour. That seems kind of low to me so let's hope you get a comp badge and some free time to prowl around the Con.

Submit your resume; SDCC fans "are most certainly welcome."

Do you want to work for CCI?

1 OCTOBER 2015

Admit it, you know you do. You want to infiltrate their shadowy organization and learn all their secrets and slowly, stealthily, hijack their infrastructure until the SDCC badge sales favor you and all your friends.

You probably won't be able to pull off any of that as a Senior Accountant, but that's what they want to hire right now - a FT employee who can "tackle the ever-increasing complexities and special financial reporting requirements of our non-profit organization." That's just today, though. They've created a whole new Jobs page just like a real company, albeit without a stock photo of two people laughing and drinking coffee over an office desk. They're even on Career Builder. Keep checking back!

I'd be remiss if I didn't note that October started today, and that's only 1 month away from the (probable) month of SDCC Pre-registration. (Official word: "Attendee Preregistration will launch sometime after October 31, 2015." So November is a safe guess.) That makes this next month kind of like Schrodinger's Badge - maybe you're going to Comic-Con 2016, maybe not, but you won't have to face the reality of a failure for a few more weeks, until the 1st guillotine of a badge sale falls on your neck. Feel confident about your imminent Preview Night badge while you can.

Another SDCC job - be a Ninjabot

19 MAY 2015

Did you get rejected from those other Comic-Con jobs? Do you feel qualified to be a Ninjabot Helper? Then you might want to quickly apply for a booth job before 5 June.

Qualifications: you must be energetic and friendly. Give it a shot here.

100-200 San Diego Comic-Con workers needed

4 MAY 2015

Would you like to get a paying job at San Diego Comic-Con? Be right there in the magic and hustle and earn money at the same time? Because an agency called On Tour 24/7 is looking for 100-200 workers.

"What kind of workers?" you might be asking. The answer is "event staff and promotional models/brand ambassadors." In other words, go ahead and apply and see what happens. You'll need to create a talent profile and include photos - but that doesn't mean you need to be drop-dead gorgeous, so don't let that rattle you. You'll also need to list your "previous Comic Con experience and the city it was activated in." How much do I love that phrasing? Let me count the ways.

Go ahead and be your most audacious self and apply. But if you get picked, you have to tell me your juicy behind-the-scenes stories.

Are you looking for a comic convention career?

13 MARCH 2015

Because if you are, Salt Lake Comic Con - you know, San Diego Comic-Con's arch nemesis, the Snow Meiser to their Heat Meiser - is hiring. Specifically for these positions:

  • PR/Media Relations Internship (unpaid)
  • Community Outreach Internship (unpaid)
  • Corporate Sales Manager
And just maybe a graphic designer, based on the weird job ad image.

Those are all transferrable skills, and Comic Cons are a booming business. So don't think these are specialized niche industry jobs. Go forth and grow your resume and maybe one day you'll be running the smooth and efficient Con we all dream of.
