The clock is ticking on the Comic-Con Museum contest for SDCC 2019 badges

You have to hand it to CCI - they know how to keep us guessing. Usually our questions are along the lines of "When is the badge sale?" and "Why didn't I get a hotel room?" and "Am I even in the right line?"

But then CCI tantalized us with hints about the Comic-Con Museum - and then at SDCC, they announced an audacious contest-fundraiser for 2019 SDCC badges that has sparked a few questions. If you haven't entered it yet, skip on over right now. The deadline is only a month away. And it's worth a shot, even if you don't feel like raiding your 401K to play.

Because yes, this is a contest where you have to pay to play. It's for a good cause, of course; the ultimate nerdy experience, Comic-Con Museum. You may be wondering just how much money it takes to create a museum like this - the answer is apparently $25 million. That seems high to me but I guess you can't put a (reasonable) price tag on pop culture memorabilia. 

How The Contest Works

You fork over a certain amount of cash - anything from $10 to $5,000 - and receive a commensurate amount of entries. $10 gets you 100 entries, $5,000 gets you 50,000 entries, and everything else falls somewhere in between. (For some reason, paying $25 for 250 entries is the most popular option, even though paying $50 gets you 1000 entries.)

What You Get

Quite a bit, actually:

• Full badges, including Preview Night
• Airfare and hotel
• Photo ops
• Exclusive tickets to live shows
• An SDCC "concierge" to help the winner plan out their show
• Reserved Hall H seating
• An invitation to the Comic-Con Museum inaugural event - or a "similar 50th SDCC event"
• Dinner with a Comic-Con executive who will answer any questions about SDCC

The Important Questions

Badges, hotel, plane tix: that's expected. Ditto photo ops. The concierge and AMA dinner, that's not something other contests can offer and potentially interesting. I would take full advantage of that dinner.

But what's really intriguing is the "similar 50th SDCC event" mentioned as an alternative to the Comic-Con Museum event. I'm guessing that's because they aren't quite sure the Museum will open in tandem with SDCC (I've seen 2020 mentioned as a more realistic date) or at least be event-ready. (Right now it is hosting small events, though not technically open. But I can't imagine they'll hold a fancy inauguration until every finishing touch has been perfected.)

So what kind of 50th event are we getting? If it's something where tickets are hotly coveted, that implies most of us won't be able to attend. So will there be a celebration that's open to all attendees?

And more importantly - does the October 18 contest deadline hint at a Returning Registration date?

I know many of you went on high alert with the child validation deadline passing last week; others are convinced RR won't take place until after this fundraiser ends. However, I'm not sure that's the case since you could argue getting shut out of Ret Reg would be a powerful motivator to contribute. In other words, I just don't think we're in a position to make good predictions. As someone who's going to be on a plane all of Saturday, October 20, I'm hoping there's no connection.


We're in that season where SDCC 2018 already feels like a distant memory while SDCC 2019 feels too far in the future to worry about. But with this contest-fundraiser drawing to a close, it's something to pay attention to. You and I probably won't win anything, but at least we'll be contributing to the Comic-Con Museum and our futures at SDCC.

DC Super Heroes Challenge wants to send you to San Diego Comic-Con

Are you a master of AR art or Snapchat's Lens Studio? Have you always wanted to build a Lens using Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman? If so, you and your best friend just might go to San Diego Comic-Con - not only with your hotel and 4-day badges taken care of, but with $500 and some DC and Snapchat swag bags.

DC has teamed up with Snapchat to test your superhero artistry and see if you're deserving of the prize. The deadline is 8 July so you have some time to finesse your augmented reality craft. Here's how to enter:

It's lottery time for SDCC Souvenir Book prints

It's June, which means it's time to turn our sights onto the looming beast that is San Diego Comic-Con. If you're a first-timer - of which there seem to be a smaller than usual crop this year - then you may be wondering when all the good announcements start. While a few exclusives have been flashed around, now is when we'll begin to hear about the parties and shows and panels that will comprise your Comic-Con days and nights. And because SDCC is going to come up faster than you can imagine, I'll post a list of ways to start preparing this weekend.

Let's start by talking about this latest lottery SDCC is offering us. The cover of the 2018 Souvenir Book is out and it's a depiction of Marvel film characters by Matt Taylor. But what's different this year is that 1000 limited edition Mondo prints are being sold; and you can only buy one by being picked in a lottery.

You can "submit interest" in CCI's words by logging into your Member ID account and visiting the Exclusives tab. This is for attendees only; no exhibitors, pros, press or other Comic-Con species are eligible to enter. Yes, probably all of those people know an attendee they can maneuver through, but I still like the way this is being handled. Being last in line is a long-standing attendee complaint. Using Member ID accounts to sort the attendees from everyone else is a good jumping off point for fixing that.

The deadline to enter is Thursday, 7 June, at noon PST. "On or around" 12 June you'll get an email telling you how to log into your account and find out if you were selected. Why can't the emails just tell you that directly? Because it's Comic-Con.

And if you don't get picked? A few more prints will be available through the Comic-Con museum in Balboa Park, so save your $$$$. Because those will definitely cost way more than the $70 you'll spend buying one as an attendee.


I know some of you dislike lotteries while others feel they are the closest thing to "fair" that we'll get in our Comic-Con world. It does seem to be the general MO for most of our endeavors, from hotel rooms to badges to autographs. Will Hall H move to a lottery system one day? That's not for me to opine on since I avoid it entirely, but I'm sure you devout campers have fierce opinions on it.

Back to first-timers. You can find out more about the Souvenir Book here. You'll get it for free when you enter the Con, a journal of articles and art that delve into specific pop culture topics and anniversaries. It's something to settle onto the sofa with when you're back home and have time to actually sit down and read. (You won't have that time at the Con.) And while all this hullabaloo about the Mondo prints might convince you they are absolutely indispensable to your SDCC experience - don't get too hung up on this lottery. Your chances are slim and it's healthy to work that into your perspective now. So don't be too sad if you don't get a print - you'll find a few other thousand things to spend your money on at Comic-Con.

After years of plodding along on a predictable course, CCI has put on their pioneer hat these last few years - founding Barriohaus LLC, surprising us with badge sales late and early, gifting us with attendee pins and making other unforeseen moves. And now they're doing something even more brazen - auctioning off SDCC badges to the wealthy/desperate for a good cause.

10 pairs of Preview Night badges, to be specific, with all proceeds going to UNICEF. But before you leap onto Ebay, be ready to crack open your 401K - the initial bids have already climbed as high as $7,000. Hey, it is a charity auction.

And just to make this whole affair even more exciting, some of the badges will be auctioned off at the exact moment Returning Reg goes live on Saturday. Don't worry, you can do both - but this is a way for people ineligible for Ret Reg to feel like they're part of the madness, I guess.

 So there you go. If you're a trust fund nerd, a Silicon Valley robber baron or some other well-funded geek in the 1% - get ready to beat the competition with your wallet. You could have the dubious honor of paying more to go to San Diego Comic-Con than anyone in history.

And who knows - maybe next year CCI will have an entire reality show bequeathing badges to those nerds who prove themselves most worthy. Not going to lie: I would watch it.

ECCC Saturday is gone - but contests are offering 4-day tickets

Because it is a Comicon par excellence, Emerald City sold out of Saturday tickets. This follows last year's pattern, where Saturday tix were gone after about a week - which means no one should be caught off guard.

Last week there was a fair amount of kvetching when 4-day tickets sold out in about 16 minutes. Dramatic nerds took to social media to wail they couldn't go to Emerald City now, it was so unfair, whyyyy - but there remained single day badges for all 4 days. The price difference: $30. And with Saturday tickets lingering for a week, it's fair to say that if you really wanted to go to Emerald City, you could.

And you still can. Thursday, Friday and Sunday are waiting for you to buy them. You can also try to win tickets in several ways:

•  Attend "special events" like this weekend's Treasure Your Chest benefit. It's hard to find a better way to spend Saturday night than nerding out and fighting breast cancer.

• Join the Emerald City Comic Passport Club.This sounds like the most fun contest ever. Walk into one of 13 comic shops and start your passport; after collecting at least 9 stamps at different shops, you'll be eligible to win a pair of ECCC tickets. Not only does this provide you with an excellent excuse to buy more comic books, but even if you don't get the free tickets, you'll get an exclusive item at the Con.

In the meantime, you can get that ECCC feeling at other events - like next weekend's After Dark Halloween Happy Hour (I guess it's dark in Seattle from 5-8 pm) and the ECCC Harry Potter Scavenger Hunt. I know someone who went to the last Harry Potter hunt and she really liked it, FWIW.

So there you have it - the full, complete Emerald City experience is still possibly in reach. But even if you can't find, beg or win a Saturday/4-day ticket, you can still get 3 days - and that's nothing to sneeze at.

First-timers, I have a present for you

Hello, excited first-timer. (I hope you're excited, anyhow.) This is a reminder that I want to hear the story of your first San Diego Comic-Con - what you thought, what you conquered, what you loved and disliked the most.

I collect tales from first-timers every year and I realized I never really reward them for sharing - so this year I'm giving away 2 sets of Comic-Con merit badges. These were a big hit at Emerald City Comicon and you can win a complete set by sharing your inaugural story with me. Just email me after the Con at sdccguide@gmail.com by July 28 and you're in the running.

I recommend reading some of your ancestors' first-time experiences - while not all of them will reflect your SDCC interests, you may pick up some valuable advice. As a jaded old veteran, I feel fairly distanced from how a first-timer sees the Con these days. So consider seeing what these people had to say -and these first-timers and these from 2015 and these other 2015ers and these. Oh, and these first-timers too.

This contest comes to you courtesy of IDW and Traveling Stories, so yes, it's legit. Never heard of Traveling Stories, you say? Their mission "is to help kids fall in love with reading by the 4th grade." So you know they're good people.

This contest has been promoted at WonderCon and runs through 14 June, so you'll have plenty of competition.


Why you should enter anyhow

Because 32 million U.S. adults can't read. That's 14% of the population; and 21% read below a 5th grade reading level. So even if you don't win this contest, you'll help people have more earning power, higher political literacy, and the joy that comes from reading magnificent books and comics.

And given that 82% of kids from low-income families have trouble reading by 4th grade, setting them up for an unemployable future, contributing to literacy programs does more than help these kids on an individual basis - it creates a healthier economy and puts more incredible books, screenplays and graphic novels in everyone's future. Every writer begins as a reader, after all.

So what have we learned over this holiday weekend?

The SDCC Events Guide cover is a beautiful tribute to Star Trek and Spock.

Another Comic-Con contest from NBC San Diego is afoot. I feel like there weren't as many of the big showy contests earlier this year, and now we're having a ton of radio station contests & the like. Free trip to Comic-Con either way.

This SDCC exclusive of Aquaman and Cthulhu is just begging for an underwater buddy cop series to accompany it.

The Black Girl Nerds of Color meetup is happening at the Hilton Bayfront Friday night. RSVP here.

Hasbro dazzled everyone with this Kylo Ren  (available at Star Wars celebration in London) and very cool melted Vader helmet, as well as this Obi-Wan with glowing Leia hologram. How much do we all want these? Quite a lot.

We got a look at new concept art for the Justice League. 

Bandai showed off Chogokin Voltron.

Action Lab Entertainment is bringing a smorgasbord of creators and exclusives and signings to the Con.

CCI's David Glanzer gave an interview to Forbes on San Diego Comic-Con, growth, money, their economic impact on San Diego and why the Con is so damned popular.

This Thursday night Fandom party is free.

Chris Hardwick's podcast and stand-up events at SDCC are not.

And on that note, I'll close with two questions that I keep getting asked:

• Where are all the parties - the big branded ones that are usually talked up by everyone in these final weeks?
• What will the WB bags look like?

My answer is to both: I don't know. I do think there are fewer events this year (granted, there's still plenty to choose from) and that suggests that companies are concluding the same thing many studios and creatives already have: marketing at SDCC doesn't always bring in justifiable ROI. My nightlife plans for this year's Con are pretty much dinner, drinks and hanging with friends/colleagues, and most people I know are shooting for the same.


As for the bags, we'll find out soon enough. First-timers, we are referring to huge and very durable bags that will be handed out to you on arrival. Each will have a certain design (usually a TV show) and while some people don't care which bag they get, most of us do - to the extent that there is plenty of trading that goes on. Right now you might be thinking, "All this fuss over a bag?" But they're great for carrying your purchases in and you will see plenty of stuffed ones being carried out by bellhops and loaded into cars on the last day of the Con. (They're also great for moving or donating to shelters so you may hang onto yours even after you get home.)

I know everyone's itching for Conan tickets and Nerd HQ news. I'm thinking Nerd HQ has got to come out with their Conversations schedule this week, no later. As always, pay close attention.

Just like we've all been hoping, American Gods is hitting Comic-Con.

Unlike what we've been hoping, #ConanCon tickets haven't gone live yet.  Right now we know that Silicon Valley will be there (maybe Weds) and Suicide Squad (hard to say) and everyone is hoping for Supernatural, Guardians of the Galaxy, TWD, GOT and Justice League. 

We know what this summer's Walking Dead photo op will be: you looking terrified in Negan's deadly lineup. AMC also announced a few activations and panels: Preacher, The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead.

Good news for future Comic-Cons; Death Note is in production. Except Light Yagami is now Light Turner and this is the cast and Warner Bros dropped it before Netflix picked it up and I just don't know. Who's playing Ryuk? Are the shinigami even in this "Western adaptation?"

Boom announced their exclusives ....

... and Shout! announced a whole slew of appearances, panels and exclusives - Gail Simone, Power Rangers, Mystery Science Theatre 3000, and it just keeps going from there.

Club Sabbat is holding a cosplay contest & party Saturday night of the Con for goths, kinksters & nerds of the alternative persuasion.

In the contest department, Quicken Loans has moved beyond annoying junk mail: they want to send you to the Star Trek premiere and pay your mortgage for a year.

 And Skydance is still running their own Star Trek contest - enter if you haven't already.

Be a TV star on SDCC/Syfy game show

Right off the bat: this is ONLY for people with a badge for San Diego Comic-Con. I know. Usually contests are to get you into SDCC; this one is to get you on TV.

We all know Syfy is telecasting from the Con. One of their activities will be a Sharknado trivia game show. So if you're a Sharknado fan and you want to exult in your Sharknado expertise on television, this could be your golden opportunity.

You need to have "a fun, outgoing personality," have an SDCC badge already, and be a fan of the 1st three Sharknado movies. You also need to be in San Diego on Tuesday, 19 July for the pre-shoot taping. So be ready to adjust your schedule accordingly.

Good luck with what will undoubtedly be the most sophisticated Comic-Con event of all time.

A month from tomorrow is the last day of Comic-Con. How is that possible?

In case you don't have a badge, you still have a few days left to enter Collider's amazing contest.


Speaking of badges, was anyone else hoping attendees would have a different non-Lucille badge image? Maybe something from Suicide Squad or Archer or Doctor Strange or if TWD, Ezekiel and his tiger?

Of course, Lucille is definitely the belle of the SDCC ball, given that you can pick up a Lucille key chain or bat.

Sideshow Collectibles is bringing a cool just-off-the-factory-line R2D2 and a Russ Meyers-inspired Poison Ivy. And Entertainment Earth is going to scare the crap out of you with this ghoulish Joker-in-the-box that looks like it might come to life and murder you in your sleep.

If you're going to The Retailer Lunch at SDCC, you'll pick up these freebies from DC, Boom, IDW, Marvel, Valiant and Titan.

Speaking of DC, with Rebirth in full swing, will there be panels afoot to sell us on it the way there were a thousand of them promoting The New 52? I'm guessing yes.

We got a fresh trailer for Fantastic Beasts today that includes more creatures, including one that looks like Groot impregnated a mantid.

Everyone knows the fan love that goes into cosplay, but not as many people see the passion that fuels fan fiction and fan films. Today CBS and Paramount unleashed new guidelines for Star Trek fan films, and they go way beyond disclaimers. Will this discussion make it into some of the legal creative panels at Comic-Con? Probably.

What will almost definitely be at Comic-Con: news about the Star Trek series.

You can start voting in the MTV Fandom awards, whether or not you're going to the Comic-Con Thursday night party.

The new Sharknado movie is called "The 4th Awakens" if you need cosplay ideas for the panel.

FX news to thrill and sadden you: American Horror Story won't be at SDCC. But Archer will and it's been renewed for 3 more seasons. Let's hope we get more good exclusives this summer, though last year's face pillow will be hard to beat.

I'm back in the world of the Internet-connected and should be safely here for the next month, so let's get to it. Where are we with San Diego Comic-Con?

Press badges are shipping out - but if you've got one coming, you probably know that already.

And if you're still plotting your way into the Star Trek premiere - here's a contest to not only attend, but meet the cast and hit the after-party.

Skybound's Negan and Glenn exclusive is getting non-comic-readers in a tizzy. So remember: this is based on the comic book, not the show. Should you get it anyhow if you're just a TV fan? I say yes, if only because the box says "Comes with exclusive smashed Glenn head."

Wonder Woman's invisible plane will be at SDCC (though not in her upcoming movie) as a symbol of her "global appeal and the special place she holds in the hearts of generations of girls who have imagined wielding their own lassos of truth." That's not what girls imagine, PR exec. Anyhow, the plane will light up at night, making it a cool photo op, and in one of the weirdest comic book merchandising deals ever, there will be Wonder Woman stuff at Pottery Barn. Tastefully minimalist, I'm sure.


If you're a first-timer, you may be wondering how people are getting tickets to the Conan O'Brien tapings, Syfy presents and other offsites everyone's talking about. While tickets are hard to get for the top events, you can lay the groundwork now. Join Team Coco for Conan tickets and pay strict attention to when the sale is announced - they will be gone in minutes.

Speaking of Syfy Presents, we know Will Arnett is hosting - and the event will have an "outdoor stage." Hmm. That sounds very MTV-spring breakish.

It seems like HBO is committing to making Westworld a success so let's ignore its previous SDCC history and hope this is one of the more interesting peeks we see this July.


One peek I think people should NOT anticipate: the Harley Quinn movie in development. Expecting that is a bit premature, though everyone is hyped about it. But it has been announced that the movie will feature other female DC heroes and villains, so maybe Warner Bros will drop a few plot details to help you plan next summer's cosplay.

Same goes for the Battlestar Galactica movie. Too soon.

Will Suicide Squad be the best VR at SDCC? Probably.

The last few years of San Diego Comic-Con have featured assorted virtual reality activations that ranged from okay to disappointing to kind of cool. We all know we're in the covered wagon years of VR and AR so I don't think anyone was too devastated by this.

However, I think this is going to be a bit different. Warner Bros is transforming the Hard Rock into the Belle Reve penitentiary, including a live-action VR event that will let you "fight alongside the Squad." You'll also get your own skull "ink" at Harley Quinn's tattoo parlor and you'll be able to take photos in a prison cell.

And again, in case you missed it below - DC is doing a Squad Up cosplay contest that will send 11 winners to Comic-Con. That's right. 11.

A few reminders

We're getting to that point in Con season when it's easy to lose track of which event tickets go live when and which exclusives got you so excited 2 weeks ago. So here are a few reminders.


If you have any interest in attending NerdHQ conversations, Syfy Live telecast or Conan O'Brien shows, you will want to start stalking their information flows. Sign up with the appropriate channels and stay vigilant. If you've just heard about these tickets being available, it's already too late.

And on the off chance you don't have a ticket and are desperately hoping for a kind-hearted scalper to make Comic-Con happen for you - maybe try a contest instead? Dark Horse and Collider are both going strong.

This sounds incredibly complex for a simple Jim Lee signing, but here it is.

IF you have a valid ECCC badge, you can enter a contest to be one of the lucky few to get your stuff signed by Jim Lee. Obviously a bunch of people will win, but probably not as many who enter. The contest went live this afternoon and will end Monday, so sign up now.

If you win, you'll get a barcoded email, which you'll bring with your photo ID to the signing. Time and date: undisclosed except to the winners. How very mysterious and guarded. When did Jim Lee turn into a secret agent?

Play Call of Duty with Seattle Seahawks at ECCC

26 FEBRUARY 2016

If you're a Call of Duty warrior - or a football fan - you may want to buy one of the last remaining Thursday tickets for Emerald City Comicon. Why? Because you might get to play Seattle Seahawks stars Bobby Wagner and Richard Sherman in the ECCC Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Open.

6 players will win a spot on their teams in the championship round. To get there, you'll first need to reserve your spot for the qualifiers. Sign-ups open on 8 March. The actual qualifiers happen on Thursday, 7 April from 2-4 pm (and will be livestreamed on one of the ECCC channels, so don't be camera shy.) From there the 6 chosen players will participate in the championship round from 4:30 - 5:00 pm with Sherman and Wagner.

As Comic Con stories go, that should be a pretty classic one to dine out on. I know a lot of gamers say Call of Duty requires no real skill but I'm guessing many of you will be furiously practicing anyhow throughout March. Good luck.

Will you be crowned cosplay champion at ECCC?

Emerald City has always been known for its next-level cosplay. Ingenious, creative and convincing, the cosplay you see at ECCC represents some of the highest skill in the field. These cosplayers go beyond Spiderman and Harley Quinn clones to depict characters from cult movies and indie comics, and the sheer effort involved is mindboggling.

So it's quite exciting that Saturday night at Emerald City - 9 April - will be the Western Championships of Cosplay. The "first stop in the ReedPOP's 2016 Global Cosplay Competition Circuit," this event will be watched by thousands in person and livestreamed by no doubt thousands more. $5,000 in cash prizes will be handed out and the winner will make it into the final round of the 2017 C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay in Chicago, the final stop. (Yes, this competition apparently spans two calendar years. No donuts for you if you want to make sure you fit into the same costume.)

You must represent a character or element from the pop culture realm and demonstrate mastery in one of four skill categories:

• FX
• Needlework
• Larger than Life
• Armor

You'll be judged on the quality and craftsmanship; obviously no store-bought costumes are tolerable. You can't pick your own music and you can't speak.

Are you still on the fence about NYCC? Are you vacillating between "Maybe I should save the money" and "No, I definitely should go" and "I'll see what my schedule looks like" even as summer keeps passing and you need to make a decision? Maybe that's just me.

Well, this could sway you; The Walking Dead's season premiere will debut on 9 October, Friday night at Madison Square Garden as part of New York Comic Con Super Week. Exciting! Except of course that even the great capacious MSG can't contain the horde of fans desperately wishing to attend - so there's a sweepstakes.

Enter now; 10 winners are selected daily. Remember, this isn't being held in a movie theatre like an SDCC premiere but in Madison Square Garden. So your chances are kind of decent? It's hard to say, really. Radio stations and cable affiliates will also be giving away tickets, so if you really want to go, make this the new Comic-Con rabbit you're chasing.

Because this is what's nice about New York Comic Con and the creation of Super Week; even after badges/tickets sell out, there are so many events and activities on the docket that you can find some way to participate. Whether that's worth traveling for or not is your call.
