7 AUGUST 2016
Now that we've had a few weeks for our San Diego Comic-Con experience to settle inside us, some of our perceptions have probably shifted a bit. Decisions like: how excited are we really for that new show or upcoming movie? Just how good, or mediocre, was that much-anticipated new graphic novel? How often have we returned to admire our most hard-won exclusive, or did we put it in a display case and forget about it?
(What doesn't get questioned as much: if we're going back in 2017. Most attendees just assume they should, even if they complained to no end about the lines and lotteries and raw deal they got in the Exhibit Hall. If that's you, consider going to another Con - but that's for another post, coming soon.)
Studios and the media are changing their perceptions too: namely of us and our box office power. Are we worth marketing to? How come we act so excited over Hall H trailers for movies that go on to tank at the box office? Why aren't we showing up and bringing all our friends?
Screen Crush noticed that Hall H isn't a surefire guarantee of big ticket sales and put together the above infographic to illustrate this reality. One number that's missing: the fewer than 7,000 seats in that auditorium. It seems a bit unfair to use the small number of Hall H viewers as some kind of cinematic bellweather - especially since, let's face it, we're an enthusiastic bunch who are then further hyped up just being at SDCC and will cheer for pretty much anything. You can't even count a full house as indicating a high level of interest in something, since any given panel probably contains attendees waiting for the panels that come after it.
In that light, it's kind of irritating that anyone even bothered to correlate box office draws with Hall H presence. Are attendees expected to have some kind of social media superpowers that can make every movie a hit? Regardless, it's true that the ensuing dismal performance of some Hall H movies has led some studios to back off. As Screen Crush says: "That's not exactly the sort of success that inspires movie studios to spend thousands of dollars on filmmaker accommodations and specially prepared trailers on top of all the money for booths, staff and the assorted swag Comic-Con attendees have come to expect as part of the San Diego experience." In other words, Hollywood is the date who took us to a fancy dinner and then got mad because we didn't put out.
This article also seems to think SDCC has 160,000 attendees so take its final point with a grain of salt, but here it is: a prediction that more and more studios will host their own events like Star Wars Celebration and D23. To which I say, possibly, but those events are hugely expensive compared to a Hall H panel - so no, I don't think Hall H and Hollywood are breaking up for good. And it's not like Comic-Con is the only place where TV makes a better showing than movies. It's been a few years now that everyone's noticed we're in a golden age of television and ongoing stories get better traction with social media and fan loyalty. So if Hollywood wants to boost their box office, maybe they should stop blaming poor marketing decisions and make better movies.

So thirsty: the official beer of ECCC is here
24 FEBRUARY 2016
No doubt the most burning question on your mind regarding Emerald City Comicon 2016 is this: what kind of beer will you be drinking? And now the answer is here. Fremont Brewing will quench your thirst with "Dark Heron" as the official ECCC beer.
What we know about your favorite new beverage: it's an "expressive IPA with experimental, unreleased hops that blend with Mosaic and Chinook hops and lock arms with malted barley and a bit of oats to create the perfect flavor."
You'll be able to buy this beer on tap at the show but also in bars and restaurants throughout Seattle AND in regional grocery stores. So even if you didn't get an ECCC ticket in time, you can drink like you did.
Fremont Brewing owner Matt Lincecum said, "Fremont Brewing is proud to partner with Emerald City Comicon for this year's Official Beer. Like ECCC, Fremont is dedicated to a creative vision, committed to quality, and a little bit weird." Who doesn't like the sound of that?
The beautiful label art was created by comic artist Justin "Moritat" Norman who "crafted the bold spirit of Dark Heron to embody the modern heroine." So if you always thought you were too refined to turn your empty beer bottles into tiki torches or steampunk goggles or xylophones, think again. These will be way too pretty for the recycling bin.
You can RSVP now for the official Dark Heron launch party on 9 March at the Fremont Brewing Urban Beer Garden at 1050 N. 34th Street.

Book a Fan Meeting Room now
17 JUNE 2015
How exciting - Comic-Con has grown. Not in numbers (god forbid) but in the venues and opportunities open to fans. And one of the changes helps attendees create the Con they want to be at - the introduction of Fan Meeting Rooms.
These are over at the Hyatt and you can schedule a session in one of them by emailing programs@comic-con.org. Include your first, second and third options for time and date and they'll send you an email confirmation if you get in. These could obviously be great for setting up a fan meetup or some other kind of mingle, especially if you don't see your particularly fandom represented yet in or out of the convention center. So don't wait - these will probably book up fast.
A few other changes:
It can't be denied that SDCC is starting to look like the alternative suggested when the expansion financing got shot down - an event that sprawls over multiple city blocks and venues. It might not be as convenient as having all programming on site, but it shouldn't be too much of a hardship either. Just be ready - as always - to do a lot of walking.

A few other changes:
- Marriott Marquis did away with some of our old stomping grounds, so a lot of external resources are at the Hyatt now. That includes the Hospitality Suite, the International Film Festival, most gaming tournaments, one of the main film tracks, and....
- The Fulfillment Room, now called Programming Premiums. First-timers, this is where you'll go to pick up the free t-shirts and other swag certain panels will bestow on you. These range from cheap trinkets to really generous merchandise packs.
- The San Diego Central Library will have 2 programming tracks - one devoted to education and literacy and one devoted to podcasts and web series.

What's free at Comic-Con
20 JULY 2014
Events
Night events at the Con have competitions, a mixer for gay comic book fans, trivia contests and countless film festivals and screenings - anime, Star Trek Episodes, Spike and Mike, the IFF. There is something for everyone after dinner.
So many gaming events. See here for a longer list but the Xbox Lounge at the Manchester Grand Hyatt and the Nintendo Lounge at the Marriott Marquis alone could keep you busy.
History Channel's Viking Interactive is in the parking lot at 450 2nd Ave. You'll be made up into a rough-looking Viking and then be placed into 3 different scenes for a compiled video you can share on social.
Swag
Once upon a time, even B-list panels gave out t-shirts. (The
best one in my collection: a blue shirt with a hula girl and a “I Got Lei’d at
Comic-Con” from the Hawaii 5-0 panel before the first Walking Dead panel ever.)
Then the recession’s cold tentacles reached into Comic-Con and we all started
getting cheap trinkets that broke within hours.
But it looks like this year many panels are bringing good swag back to us.
The Penny Dreadful panel is handing out Tarot cards.
The Teen Wolf booth #3729 has "activations" where you can insert yourself into a custom character poster and create your own monster, as well as a free limited edition bestiary by artist Swann Smith that details the creatures of Beacon Hills.
This is just a teeny portion of the prizes and shirts and free stuff that will be handed out; most panels don't announce it ahead of time. As for eating cheaply, see my post on eating at Comic-Con.
If you know anything else that's free, post it in the comments.
If you
pay attention to all of the events going on around the Con, it can sometimes seem
like a rich nerd’s game. $80 to walk in the door of a party, $90 to hear a concert,
$40 to sit down at a meetup - it adds up fast. And that doesn’t even include exclusives, which
can sent you back $140 for a doll or $200 for an action figure.
These prices can feel a bit demoralizing when you’re
of modest means and have already spent almost 2K on your badge, flight and hotel
room (and still have to eat.) Luckily, you can have a good time at the Con without running up your credit card on spendy
events. There are so many things to do that are free (or cheap), you won’t even
remember the more expensive options.
Here's what's free at Comic Con.
uMTV is
throwing that party Thursday night with the Fan Awards in Petco Park.
Also on Thursday night: Beer Bust at Comic-Con, which serves up 400 free beers.
FearFestEvil party is on Friday night and free as long as you RSVP.
Incognito with Adam Savage on Friday night is also free, and first come first serve.

Nerd HQ may charge for
panels but there’s a lot of free stuff to do there otherwise, including their
Thursday night dance party.
Borderlands Prequel
Laser Tag will be at the top of Petco Park. Free, but people with badges get
priority over anyone else.
Godzilla Interactive
will be behind Hall H. You’ll have a 24 foot Godzilla to admire and a graffiti
wall to adorn with your personal Godzilla moments.
Homer's Dome invites you to take a 4-D journey into Homer's thoughts by the Hilton Bayfront.
ArtExpo is
free and takes place at the Wonderbread Factory - 121 14th Street.
Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles Interactive will be in the Petco parking lot. You can see the latest
movie trailer, get a Turtle-style photo, eat free pizza and get a free foam
disk.
Sin City Interactive is
in the same place and will show clips/trailers, get a photo of themselves in
the film, get t-shirts and see the 6 classic cars in the movie. The Suicide
Girls should be there off and on too.
We don’t know exactly
what will happen at the Game of Thrones Survive the Realm experience in the
Omni Gallery but we know it will be awesome. A photo of you flying around on a
dragon? Crushing the Red Viper’s head? Fighting a bear? Probably something we can't imagine. ETA: Per Andrew we know that it will have a virtual wall for people to climb and the first 2000 people a day will get swag.
Adult Swim’s Fun Houseand Meatwad Dome in the Petco parking lot are 18+ and free. The Fun House is kind of a bounce house/obstacle course; the Dome I'm not sure of.
The Sleepy Hollow
Virtual Reality Bridge Escape will be in that area. You can wear an Oculus Rift
headset to experience the Headless Horseman yourself.
Gotham Zipline and
Police Cars are free; the Police Cars will be driving around and you just need
to flag them down. The Zipline you can find outside Hall H.

The
Assassin's Creed Experience outside the Hilton Gaslamp will ask you to climb
ropes, do a 25 foot “leap of faith” and generally scramble around an obstacle
course for a free t-shirt.
Not counting the cost of your get-up, the Saturday night Zombie
Walk is free and fun.
Friday's Orphan Black meetup will have free food, drinks. 1 pm at Southpaw Social at 815 J Street.
The Strain Fan Event on Saturday night will screen 2 episodes and have food and drinks.
Adult Swim is hosting Tim and Eric's Jammy Party for the world premiere of their new live action show Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories. You have to wear pajamas to attend and RSVP .

open to all at Jolt'n Joe's every day.
The Penny Dreadful panel is handing out Tarot cards.
The Adult Swim Funhouse and Meatdome in the Petco Park parking lot
are giving out t-shirts to anyone who completes them.
Simon& Schuster will give out Star Trek books, different ones every day of the Con.
If you donate blood at
the Hyatt, you get a swag bag full of goodies, including a True Blood
t-shirt. You also get entered into multiple drawings.
Creepy & Eerie’s Saturday panel will hand out Creepy swag.
While I can’t say for sure, the Game of Thrones experience gave
out t-shirts last year and probably will this year too.
On Friday at 1 pm, the BoxTrolls food truck will hand out free “delicacies”
from chef David George Gordon. Petco Parking lot.
The Temple of Art 11:00 Saturday panel will have t-shirts and giveaways.
Red Giant
Entertainment is offering a Giant-Sized #0 comic 4-pack to anyone who comes to their Sunday
panel: .

"The Strain" screening & fan event
18 JULY 2014
If there's one new show everyone anticipated this summer, it's The Strain. Just like all our other TV obsessions, it's on Sunday night, and it's on the often-tasteless FX and written by Guillermo del Toro. No doubt you've seen the horrible/awesome ads of a tiny worm squiggling into an eyeball.
The plot: The Strain is "the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. Goodweather and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself."

Now you can see the first two episodes at "an exclusive fan event" that will have food, drinks, swag and mysterious "special appearances."
Where: Reading Cinemas Gaslamp 15 at 701 5th Ave, San Diego)
When: Saturday, 26 July -- VIP Arrival at 6:30 pm / General Audience Admission at 7:30 pm
To become a VIP, you have to perform a scavenger hunt of sorts. First you have to visit the FOX (#4229), Harper Collins (#1029), and Dark Horse (#2615) booths and pick up a The Strain wristband from each one. You can do this on Friday or Saturday from 1- 4pm. Come to the theater at 6:30 pm Saturday, show your 3 wristbands and you'll be whisked inside for... well, I don't know. Probably the same experience as everyone else, but with special seating and probably some kind of gift. But it sounds like the general audience will get swag too.
Adventure Time ConQuest
16 JULY 2014
Does anyone else feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of events and promotions this year? It's almost numbing at this point. Like I love Adventure Time, especially Marceline/Marshall Lee, but there's no way I'd have the patience or energy to complete their Exhibit Hall scavenger hunt, aka the Adventure Time ConQuest.
But maybe you will. By participating, you'll get "secret text-messaged clues" to visit any of the 11 participating partner booths and locations listed below - or you can visit the Cartoon Network booth (#3735) and look for signage to get started. As you go, you'll get incentives, premiums and rebates for some Adventure Time products.

- Abrams (Booth #1216) will have copies of the New York Times Best-Selling book Adventure Time Encyclopaedia, as well as its recently-released Adventure Time: A Totally Math Poster Collection with 25 copies signed by illustrator Tony Millionaire, plus calendars. You'll get an additional 20% discount on the poster book, and anyone who purchases any Adventure Time merchandise will receive a free 2015 Adventure Time mini-calendar, while supplies last.
- BOOM! Studios/KaBOOM! (Booth #2229) will feature the latest issues of its top-selling Adventure Time comic book series and related mini-series.
- Entertainment Earth (Booth #2343) will have a BMO Tin Tote Gift SetConvention Exclusive that includes a metal tin tote, 10-ounce insulated stainless steel container and mini journal inside the tote.

- Little Orbit (The New Children’s Museum) will let you play its upcoming Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom video game for the very first time before its release this fall. This will be the terminal stop on the ConQuest and fans who finish the quest will redeem their OMG medallion there.

- Penguin Group (Booth #4612) will showcase its line of MAD LIBS®, activity books, journals and much more based on Adventure Time, and will be giving away free buttons. Anyone who purchases any three MAD LIBS® products will get a free Adventure Time/MAD LIBS® tote bag.
- Rubie’s Costume Company (Booth #3649), maker of Adventure Time costumes and select accessories, will feature its one-size-fits-all Finn hat at its booth, and ConQuest participants can pick it up for 40% off the purchase price.
- USAopoly (Booth #1017) will preview its all-new Munchkin® Adventure Time, which will launch this August, and ConQuest participants can pick up a free Munchkin® Adventure Time game card at the booth.
- WeLoveFine (Booth #5647) will offer up a wide assortment of its fan-favorite Adventure Time apparel, including t-shirts, sweatshirts, dresses and leggings. ConQuest participants get a deal at $25 for one or $40 for two shirts.
If you complete the quest, you can claim your reward - and uber ConQuesters who earned their Jake and Ice King medallions in 2012 and 201 can bring those to The New Children’s Museum redemption center to earn a triple threat reward. I don't know what those are, sorry. But it sounds like this is an excellent way to pick up discounted Adventure Time stuff either for you or to do some early Christmas shopping for the kids in your life.
A gift for you sad non-attendees at home
16 JULY 2013
Just about anyone with a budget can hand out swag at Comic-Con, but it takes a sensitive company to think about all of the people whose hopes were dashed on Registration Day. This summer that would be IMAX and they're here to help you win a gift bag containing - in addition to other things - a year's worth of IMAX tickets.
Just email thecollidermailbox@gmail.com with your name and address, include IMAX Giveaway in what they call the headline (but I assume is the subject line) and make sure you've "liked" them on Facebook. They say winners are "randomly" picked but they also say it doesn't hurt to throw in a reason why you deserve to win, so make up a sob story about how royally you suffered in your failed attempt to get a Comic-Con badge. Or just tell the real one.
Here's what in the gift bag:
Oh, and they didn't forget about attendees; free pedicabs will be afoot to ride you wherever you want to go around the Gaslamp and street teams will be handing out gifts. Do not try to win the gift bags, because those are for the people staying home, and the bad karma will jinx you during Pre-Registration. You're already getting the gift of Comic-Con.

San Diego Comic-Con on a budget
13 JULY 2013
As you peruse the many doings around Comic-Con next week, you'll begin to notice a theme. Dead Central's cool haunted house ghost hunt will set you back $60-100. Trickster's Symposia $40. The Walking Dead Fan Meet-up is $45. The Final Fantasy Concert, up to $89.
This can feel kind of gutting if you already spent most of your scratch on plane fare, hotel and badge, and aren't even sure how you'll afford your meals. But there's a lot to do around the Con that's free - and despite all the spendy events you hear about, I'm guessing most attendees save their money for the Exhibit Hall anyhow.
Here's what's free at Comic Con.
Trickster is free (except for the Symposium) and well worth visiting.
So are all the numerous screenings at the Con - film festivals, anime, Star Trek Episodes, Spike and Mike. Really, there is something for everyone.
Night events at the Con. Trivia game shows, that Cosmos airing that I would totally be at if I didn't have plans Saturday night, Kevin Smith, mixers, the Chris Gore podcast - CCI has really stepped up and provided good programming for the after-dinner hours.
Gaming events. Lots of them. Break Invaders at Dick's Last Resort, Team Shifty and the Pac-Man Project Gaming Event at the Hilton Gaslamp, the XBox Gaming Lounge at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, the Assassin's Creed IV Pirate Ship docked behind the Con, the Nintendo Gaming Lounge at the Marriott Marquis. Even GamrCon tickets start at an affordable $16
And there's the Ender's Game Experience on the lawn by the Hilton, the Adult Swim Fun House in the Petco Parking Lot, and the History Channel’s Vikings Interactive Waterway in the parking lot at 450 Second Ave.
World's End is hosting a bar crawl for fans on Wednesday afternoon, starting at the Commons. Some attendees will receive tickets to a World's End party that night.
MTV2 is throwing a party for all badge-holders on Thursday. That's their wording - "badge-holder." I never know if that means you can wave your barcode confirmation for Saturday under their nose and get in or if you actually have to already have your badge. Anyhow, it's live music, free food and a one-hour special of Teen Wolf.
The Superhero Party at Side Bar – 9:00 pm at 536 Market Street – is free if you dress as a superhero.
As noted earlier, you can go to the Petco Star Wars Yappy Hour at the Hotel Indigo from 4:00 - 7:00 for free AND get a free drink if you wear your best Wookie outfit.
The Freaks and Geeks Party is free at 8:00 pm on Friday at Taste & Thirst on 4th Ave.
As far as swag goes, I think we can all admit our Comic-Con benefactors aren't as generous as they used to be. I remember when panel t-shirts were de rigeur. Now you get a ticket for a mystery gift, and walk all the way to the Marriott fulfillment room to be handed a cheap tiny flashlight that doesn't work. But there will still be plenty of swag handed out. A few things:

Psych the Musical is airing Wednesday at Reading Cinemas at midnight but you must RSVP.
Although I know some of you have complicated feelings about Felicia Day, Geek and Sundry is open to all at Jolt'n Joe's every day. I think a few events might be invite-only but by and large, you can drop by. The Community party is Friday night at 8.
Adult Swim will be giving free mini-massages at their booth #3721. Is that creepy? Probably a little for the massage therapists who have to touch sweaty Comic Con attendees.
The Adult Swim Funhouse in the Petco Park parking lot is giving out a free custom live screen printed t-shirt to anyone who "survives" the fun house.
And if you donate blood at the Omni, you get a swag bag full of goodies, including a True Blood t-shirt.
Petco is handing out Yoga dog ears at #2913. Expect to get really sick of seeing these bobbing around the Con.
Finally, there's free food to be had at the Elder Scrolls Online Food Truck at Park Boulevard and Imperial Ave on Thursday from 11:30 am – 3:00 pm. Free Eidarmelt sandwiches with a choice of dipping sauces accompanied with Tangy Ninroot, Corkbulb Crisps and Alocasia Fruit Juice and frozen yogurt.

Swag and Freebies
19 JULY 2011
Again, if you know anything good, post it in the comments.
Warner Bros. is bringing 130,000 giant Con bags featuring different shows from Supernatural to Fringe to Vampire Diaries. For the first time, the bags convert into a backpack, which is a cool trick. They'll have the usual people passing them out on the floor but you can also visit booth 4545.
Hit up Macy's at Horton Plaza on Friday between noon and 6 pm for 10,000 free chocolate chip cookies, courtesy of Doubletree.
Discovery Channel is giving away Shark Week bags on the street. In a world of free bags, these rank high.
The River pilot on Friday (2:15, room 6a) is giving away "a Comic Con exclusive" which is most likely a t-shirt.
Fox is giving away mini-posters on shows like Fringe, Glee, Terra Nova, Bones, The Simpsons, Family Guy, etc.
Not actually swag, but a raffle: Dark Horse is giving away $500 of free digital comics every day. Come to their booth at 2615 to enter every day from 9:30 - 10:00 am.
Friday's NCIS panel is distributing free t-shirts. So is the panel for Bones.
ABC is giving away flight bags (not regular Con bags - these retail for $89) at their Pan-Am booth 3921. This booth has a Pan Am 1960's replica first class cabin and if you visit, you're given a boarding pass and flight time to come back and watch a preview of the show. If you've never heard of it, it stars Christina Ricci and is about pilots and flight attendants in the 1960's. Mad Men in the sky, I'm guessing.
The Lost Girl panel is distributing free prequel comic books to everyone who attends the panel. Which is on Friday at 7:30 pm in 24ABC. This is the Syfy version of the Canadian show about a bisexual succubus.
WB is giving away a ton of stuff. To start: "several" Swords of Omen from Thundercats. Enter at their booth, 4545. They're also giving away - I am not making this up - a Tweety Bird-brand Volkswagen bug. Presumably you can have the Tweety Bird painted over.
Also from WB: playing cards, puzzle cubes, Lt. Jim Gordon replica eyeglasses, collectible salt shakers from Supernatural, and Vampire Diaries Blood Bag water bottles, Fringe luggage tags, Harry Potter pins, and WB scavenger hunt cards. All of which will be showcased by a 30 foot Warner Bros. water tower, with giant mirrors and movie star portraits dangling above the peasants, and the second floor of the booth surrounded by a ring of fire. Probably Siegfried and Roy will pop out at some point with their tigers.
You can get a free 30 Days of Night trade by handing in a Twilight book at the IDW booth, #2643. Recycling at its finest.
Cirque de Soleil is performing for free Thursday night at Petco Park. "KÀ is a gravity-defying production featuring an innovative blend of high-flying feats, puppetry, projections and martial arts. KÀ unfolds on a custom-built, colossal, 360-degree rotating stage which forms the backdrop for this cinematic journey of aerial adventure and perpendicular acrobatics." I saw this in Vegas and couldn't describe it anymore coherently than that. If you're a Cirque de Soleil person, you'll like it.
The CBS booth is offering Enterprise bottle opener key chains, Star Trek wrist bands, NCIS phone skins, 2 Broke Girls sharpies and change purses and various DVD sets. I'm guessing some of these will be raffled.
The Ringer panel is giving away quite a bit, including custom Ringer stools and the chance to win a 3-night stay in a luxurious suite during Comic Con 2011. That's what the press release says, anyhow, but since everyone is already is on the line for their hotel bill this year, I'm not sure how that works. Anyway, another 100 people will get signed posters of the cast. The panel is at 1:45 Thursday in Ballroom 20.
CBS is holding a sweepstakes to give away 5 "Person of Interest" iPads. See their booth 4129 for details.
The Nintendo Gaming Lounge (San Diego Ballroom at the Marriott) is giving away Pokémon AR marker cards and pins, Pokémon cinch sacks, Pokédex 3D T-shirts, Kid Icarus: Uprising AR Cards, and downloadable treasure maps for Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.
