2 JUNE 2015
If you successfully qualified for a press badge for Comic-Con, you may have been waiting for an email to tell you when to register - i.e., sign in and get the barcode print-out that gets you into the Con.
Well, the deadline to do that is this Friday, 5 June. Apparently some people (maybe all?) haven't gotten any emails or notifications letting them know that. So if you're press, make sure you register this week.

Don't forget to apply for your press pass
9 DECEMBER 2014
If you want a San Diego Comic-Con press pass for Christmas, you only have a few days left to apply.
12 December is your deadline here, and I'd suggest starting right now if you haven't already. Depending on your category - print, broadcast, production company, blogger/podcast, documentary, online press, freelance journalist, photographer or videographer - you'll need to assemble various materials and plead your case oh so eloquently and generally get organized in a way that's best not left to zero hour.
Good luck.

Apply now for your SDCC press pass
30 OCTOBER 2014
It's that time of year when you offer up your press credentials to CCI and hope that they find favor with them.
If you've never applied for a press pass before, take a look at the instructions and checklist and figure out if you qualify. If you're returning press, log into your Member ID account and see if you need to re-verify - you will see DUE or NOT DUE.
The deadline is 12 December. I'll say what I say every year - despite what you hear about anyone being able to get a press pass, you do need solid credentials to qualify. That said, I've seen people from obscure magazines and outlets get press passes and other people from bigger outlets get denied, so go on and roll the dice - maybe you'll get lucky.

ECCC press applications are live
26 SEPTEMBER 2014
If you'd like to become a "credentialed media outlet" at Emerald City next March, press pass applications are now open. You can only have 3 passes per outlet and each team member must apply individually - no generic passes.
This is about more than getting free access; only approved press can conduct on-site interviews. (And those requests must be screened and approved in advance. Strict!) So if you're thinking of cornering whatever celebrities you happen to spot and asking if you can interview them off the cuff, that's apparently not allowed.
Applications close 19 December. Direct your questions to press@emeraldcitycomicon.com .

21 OCTOBER 2013
Press badge applications are officially open.
As you might imagine, as the competition for badges gets tighter, people have concocted increasingly desperate schemes to get a press pass. And once upon a time, it wasn't all that hard to get one - but CCI has not surprisingly become more stringent about who qualifies. Below are the basic facts.
You can apply now through 13 December here.

As you might imagine, as the competition for badges gets tighter, people have concocted increasingly desperate schemes to get a press pass. And once upon a time, it wasn't all that hard to get one - but CCI has not surprisingly become more stringent about who qualifies. Below are the basic facts.
- Press includes broadcast, print, bloggers, journalists and production companies.
- A press pass gets you into all events, but it does not get you to the head of the line. It does not get you any special privileges or celebrity access.
- While you'll hear advice about setting up fake blogs and such to qualify for a press pass, CCI actually does evaluate the caliber of your press credentials.
- Change from last year: documentary crews no longer get free press badges. BUT they can apply and be offered the option to purchase them.
You can apply now through 13 December here.
Comic Con Press Pass Deadline is December 10
17 NOVEMBER 2012
Here's something a little different - the press pass application deadline is earlier this year. As in, it's actually this year and not sometime next spring.
The deadline is 10 December, and you must have a member ID. Requirements vary, and you can check here to see them all, but you must qualify for one of these six categories: print, online, freelance, broadcast, podcast/blog or production company. You will need to submit an application, cover sheet and verification materials.
Once upon a time, people tried to create fake movie review sites just to qualify as a blogger for a press pass. That's actually a lot of sustained effort for a Comic Con badge - and anyway, CCI is more discriminating these days. Or so I hear. Regardless, don't think this is something you can scam your way into. You do need valid credentials.
And just to be clear, a press pass does not allow you to jump lines or get into invite-only parties. You don't ascend to the top of the Comic Con social hierarchy because you're press. It just gives you entry to the same events a regular badge does.
You can apply here.

Press badges, Exhibitor applications, IFF and Spirit of Comics Retailer awards
6 JANUARY 2012
Registration isn't quite here yet, but a few other application-type things may need your attention.
1. Nominate your favorite comic book store for the 2012 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer award. The winner will be announced at the Eisners on Friday, July 13. Note: previous winners can't be nominated, if that saves you any time.
2. The deadline for the CCI International Independent Film Festival (IFF) is 1 February, which is fast approaching. Enter here. I don't know if this has gotten larger in recent years, or if I'm simply traveling in different circles, but last summer every third person I met seemed to have a film in the IFF.
3. I'm guessing that by now, most exhibitors have already applied - but if you haven't, do that now. If you're interested but feel you're too low-profile to merit a booth, investigate anyhow. CCI is pretty good about making different space options available for exhibitors at all levels of operation.
4. If you're interested in attending Comic Con as press, you'd best be lining up your assignment now. I'm referring mainly to my freelance brethren here, not affiliated journalists. The technical deadline for applications is May 29 but you should ignore that and try to get your press credentials locked down now. Because this is a common scenario: you pitch the idea to "cover" Comic Con in a whimsical, offbeat story, the editor says great idea! and then somehow it all falls apart one week after it becomes too late for you to go as a regular attendee.
