The 2016 Eisner Awards judges have been named

18 DECEMBER 2016

Have you been burning with curiosity to know who will judge the Eisner Awards next San Diego Comic-Con? Wonder no more: all 6 have been announced.

Bill Finger Award winners announced

29 MAY 2015

                                                                           From Comics Alliance

The winners of the 2015 Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing have been announced - and they are Don McGregor and John Stanley.

The Bill Finger award is a newish award created ten years ago to recognize those creators with a body of impressive work that never really got its due. If you just asked, "But who's Bill Finger?" - that's the point. Comic book fans everywhere know Bob Kane's name as Batman's creator; few know that Bill Finger actually came up with much of the iconic imagery and backstory we associate today with the Dark Knight. The Batmobile, the Joker, his costume, his origin story - that was all Finger's brainwork. But he never saw a penny from Batman's movies and merchandise as DC signed a contract naming Kane as Batman's sole creator in perpetuity.

There's a lot to this story and if you're a Batman fan at all, I'd suggest reading up on it. Deception, greed, fame, obscurity - it's a story that plays out in bands, art studios, publishing houses and other creative workspaces every day, though it's writ large in this case. So as far as awards go, it's gratifying to see one dedicated to rewarding talented comic creators who've been overlooked.

The award will be presented during the Eisners on 10 July at SDCC.

Eisner nominees have been announced

22 APRIL 2015

The Eisner nominees have been announced. Comic-Con 2015 is starting to feel very official, isn't it?

CCI says of this year's Eisner nominees that they "highlight the wide range of material being published in comics and graphic novel form today, from companies big and small, in print and online." I mostly agree. There's nothing too radical on the list, but then every field has its awarded work and work that's more, well, experimental. I think the fact that even awarded work in comics can go off the narrative beaten path is something to celebrate. Compare themes, characters and storylines to the films and TV shows that win awards, and it's obvious that good comic book work exists in an imaginative universe like no other.

Nominees who won't surprise you: Brian K. Vaughan leading individual nominations with 4; Grant Morrison, Noelle Stephenson, Paul Tobin and Gary Groth getting 3 nominations each.  The titles topping the lists include Saga, Multiversity, Ms. Marvel, Bandette, Sandman, Little Nemo and Astro City.

Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Fantagraphics dominate among publishers but Image and IDW got a decent number of nods as well. Whether you think they got enough nods is your call. BOOM!, Oni and Drawn & Quarterly showed up a few times.

If you're a professional in the industry, you're eligible to vote at www.eisnervote.com. The deadline is 1 June. And of course the ceremony itself will be Friday night at the Con.

The SDCC 2015 Eisner judges have been announced

18 DECEMBER 2014

If you're important enough that you might be nominated for an Eisner this year, you'll want to know this: the six people who will be ruthlessly judging you have been selected. You can see their mugshots and descriptions here.

It's kind of crazy that I've been immersed in San Diego Comic-Con all these years and never knew the Eisner panel was so small. I thought it was some large and shadowy organization like the Academy Award judges. But apparently I was only half-right; these 6 judges select the nominees in April and then "professionals in the comic book industry" will vote on them.

The deadline for submitting nominations: 17 March. CCI will share the guidelines in January.

Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer nominees are out

17 JUNE 2014

If you nominated your comic book store for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award, you can check and see if they made the cut. 37 stores from the US, Canada, UK, Australia and Singapore were nominated for an award that is intended to honor stores that "have done an outstanding job supporting the comics medium both in the industry at large and in their local community."

Finalists will be announced Comic-Con week and the winner will be named at the Eisners that Friday night. My vote goes toward The Escapist for sending in the most enticing photo.

The Eisners are open for nominations

8 JANUARY 2014

Tis the season to be nominated, apparently. The Eisners are officially open for submissions which means that if you're a publisher or creator, you can nominate the best comics and books of 2013 - including your own, if you spawned something amazing.

The deadline is 17 March; you can find out more here, including the applicable categories, which are too numerous to list here.

Nominate your favorite comic shop for the Will Eisner award

30 DECEMBER 2013

If you're feeling generous and sentimental this holiday season, you might want to throw some love to your favorite comic shop and nominate it for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award.

This award is given to a store that does "an outstanding job of supporting the comics medium both in the community and in the industry." This includes having innovative and diverse inventory, fostering relationships with schools and libraries, playing an active role in community organizations and having a creative or pleasing storefront presentation. Previous winners aren't eligible to win.

It's kind of a high standard, since in my experience comic shops usually come in two flavors: the dusty, tiny shops that stock indie creators and experimental work and the bright well-organized shops that stock mainly DC and Marvel material, host Magic: The Gathering  and kids' events, and work with the community. A store that does it all is a rare bird, depending on where you live.

But if your store qualifies, go on and nominate them through this online ballot. You have until 4 April; the winner will be honored at the Friday night ceremony of San Diego Comic-Con.

Happy New Year, all.

Press badges, Exhibitor applications, IFF and Spirit of Comics Retailer awards

6 JANUARY 2012

Registration isn't quite here yet, but a few other application-type things may need your attention.

1. Nominate your favorite comic book store for the 2012 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer award. The winner will be announced at the Eisners on Friday, July 13. Note: previous winners can't be nominated, if that saves you any time.

2. The deadline for the CCI International Independent Film Festival (IFF) is 1 February, which is fast approaching. Enter here. I don't know if this has gotten larger in recent years, or if I'm simply traveling in different circles, but last summer every third person I met seemed to have a film in the IFF.

3. I'm guessing that by now, most exhibitors have already applied - but if you haven't, do that now. If you're interested but feel you're too low-profile to merit a booth, investigate anyhow. CCI is pretty good about making different space options available for exhibitors at all levels of operation.

4. If you're interested in attending Comic Con as press, you'd best be lining up your assignment now. I'm referring mainly to my freelance brethren here, not affiliated journalists. The technical deadline for applications is May 29 but you should ignore that and try to get your press credentials locked down now. Because this is a common scenario: you pitch the idea to "cover" Comic Con in a whimsical, offbeat story, the editor says great idea! and then somehow it all falls apart one week after it becomes too late for you to go as a regular attendee.

Get Discovered at Comic Con: Nominations Open for Manning Award

13 May 2011

If you're a struggling unpublished artist, this is your lucky day. Comic Con is offering you a chance to be discovered.

New artists are invited to apply for The Manning Award, given out annually at the Eisners. What are the judges looking for? That would be “storytelling ability, clarity of expression and narrative flow, and illustrative flow.”  Below are the rules.

1.The artist must be a newcomer to the comic field, with no professional work published prior to January 2009. Exceptions to this rule are:

A.Work done as an unaccredited assistant to another artist

B.Fanzine publications

C.Small press with a print run of 2000 or less

D.A one-shot in a new talent anthology comic

2.The artist's work must have been published prior to submission.

3.A sample of the artist's work must be included.

4.A sample of the artist's pencil work should be submitted if it was inked by another artist.

5.If multiple names are credited to the work, what the artist contributed must be made clear.

6.If selected as a nominee, the artist (or publisher) should be prepared to provide 23 copies of the work to be sent to the judges.

Five finalists will be selected. Send your entries to: Russ Manning Award 150 S. James Orange, CA 92869.  The contest runs until 31 May, so get busy. You can read more about it here.

Eisner Award Nominees Announced

8 APRIL 2011

The nominees for 2011 Eisner Awards, the Oscars of the Comics Industry, have been announced here.

Titles like Morning Glories, Locke and Key, Darwyn Cooke's Parker: The Outfit, Chew and American Vampire aren't much of a surprise, but there are a few atypical nominees. The Eisners tend to be hit and miss with me, but if you're looking for something new that your comic retailer doesn't carry, they are a good place to discover a favorite new writer/artist/title.

Winners will be announced at the Friday night award ceremony on 22 July.
