Update on SDCC vs SLCC lawsuit

10 JANUARY 2015

You've probably forgotten all about this by now, but one of the bigger drama bombs from last summer was San Diego Comic-Con's lawsuit against Salt Lake Comic Con. The lawsuit centers on the two names being too similar, as well as SLCC driving a snazzy car around San Diego with their logo on it. Honestly, I can't rehash it all; you can read SLCC's exhaustive coverage right here.

What matters now is that both sides' attorneys will meet with SoCal Magistrate Judge Jan Adler on February 5 to see if a settlement is in sight. I'm guessing not; the feisty SLCC has expressed a wish to see the case go before a jury.

As for CCI, they've suggested SLCC change their name to "FanX" which to me sounds like an over-the-counter medication you take for your headache /exhaustion / constipation while at a Con. (It's actually the name of SLCC's other event.) However, given the abundance of "Comicons" and "Comic Cons" all over the world, I can't see SLCC capitulating.

    1. I'm sure the judge is thinking the exact same thing.

    2. Yup! Unless SLCC is saying that they are one and the same company as SDCC then idk what the problem is with CCI because almost every state has a Comic-Con and put their city name in front of it! So unless there is more 2 the story that i haven't heard, I think CCI should just leave SLCC alone and focus more on SDCC issues and there is alot of issues there!

    3. A lot of people agree with you. Especially on that last part.

  2. If SDCC doesn't act on some convention soon, it will lose its rights and the term will go "generic". This really isn't only about SLCC infringing.

    1. I think the term went generic long ago. "Comic-Con" means SDCC to those of us who go there but my friends in New York, Boston, Denver, Phoenix and Seattle all use it to mean their local Cons. I just don't see how SDCC can sue everyone, or stuff that horse back in the barn.

  3. Its not really about SLCC as a competitor, is about using your copyright or losing it and letting it become "generic". SLCC was just at the wrong time, wrong place.
