Comic Con Free Events

8 JULY 2012

If you check my Events list on the 2012 page, you'll see a lot of the events have hefty ticket prices. But if you want to save your cash for the Exhibit Hall, there are a lot of free events, official and not, around the convention center at night.

The below list isn't complete - look in your program upon arrival and you'll see more details on film festivals, gaming events, parties and Star Trek marathons and so on.

If you have any kind of event, free or not, let me know and I will post it.

ONGOING

The Independent Film Festival schedule is here.

Thursday and Friday - The Comic Creator Connection offers the chance to meet other artists and writers interested in collaboration. You must have a badge for the day of the event and you must register in advance at programs@comic-con.org .

There's a Hall H/Ballroom 20 replay Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in 25ABC.

Promoting AE's upcoming miniseries, there's a "Coma" event Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 am - 9 pm on First Ave and J Street. You get a patient bracelet, admitted by nurses into a fake hospital, see some miniseries footage, and experience fake medical trauma. This is free.

Wednesday

There's a Heroes/Comics/Entertainment Industry tweetup happening at Buster’s in Seaport Village at 9:00. RSVP on Twitter @TheReal_Rebel

If you have a Preview Night badge, you can visit Ballroom 20 at 6:00 for pilots of Park Avenue 666, Arrow, Cult, The Following and Revolution.

You can also catch Preview Night anime at the Marriott, Hall 4, at 8:55.

Dredd is screening for free at the Reading Cinemas at 701 5th Ave at 10:00.

Thursday

Trek Nation is being screened at the Birch North Park Theatre at 7:00.

In what is going to be a new annual tradition, there's a "Dawn of the Con" party at Petco Park, featuring Rob Zombie and "a full night of fantasy, sci fi, monsters and heavy metal" from 5:30 - 11 pm. Only badged attendees allowed; that seems to mean only Thursday and four-day badge people can attend. Maybe you can flash your confirmation bar code print-out or something.

The History Channel is having a Cross-Country Cookout from 5:30 – 8:30  in the parking lot at 100 Island Avenue.

There's a Spike and Mike New Animation panel at 7:15 in 6BCF.

From 8:00 - 10:00, there's a mixer for people who liked comic books in the '60s and '70s in 28E.

If you're one of the few attendees who haven't seen Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope, report to Ballroom 20 at 8:30 for a full screening and Q&A.

Friday

Roddenberry's Comic Con Party is being held at Fluxx at 7:00. 21+.

There's a SuperHero pub crawl from noon to 9:00 pm at Taste & Thirst - 715 4th Avenue.

There's a White Collar Fan Party at The Lime. FYI, this isn't a bunch of stockbrokers getting together, it's for fans of USA’s “White Collar."

Stripped: The Comics Documentary is at 7:00 in 25ABC.

The Eisner Awards are in the Indigo Ballroom at 8:00.

Spike and Mike are in 6BCF at 10:00.

Geek and Sundry is at Belo at 919 4th Ave.

Warner Bros is hosting a free outdoor festival in Bayfront Park (by the Hilton.) While this sounds at first like one of those vague doings with face-painting and a bounce house, it will have all six Batmobiles from the movies/TV and live performances, etc.

Saturday

The Slants are playing a free show at the Stage Bar.

There's another SuperHero pub crawl from noon to 9:00 pm at Taste & Thirst 715 4th Avenue.

There's a Gay Comic Fan Mixer from 7:00-8:00 in 6A.

The Masquerade is in Ballroom 20 at 8:30. You don't have to be in the room to watch; they arrange a simulcast viewing in 5AB, 6A, and out on the Sails Pavilion (which can be preferable, in my opinion, because you can move around and meet people.)

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is holding a Live Art Auction at 7:30 in the Sapphire room AB at the Hilton Bayfront.

Sunday

The Slants are playing another free show at the Stage Bar.

The Comic Concert After-Party is at Whiskey Girl at 702 5th Ave - free, but a $5 donation is suggested.
