The Bleak Failures of the 2026 Hall H Scandal

It's Sunday, the last day of Comic-Con, and we should all be shopping for Exhibit Hall deals, nursing hangovers, and saying goodbye to SDCC friends. But too many people are too upset about a recurring issue to let us settle back with a drink and enjoy the SDCC sunset.

 

Before I dive in, I will say upfront I completely skipped Hall H this year and am only going on reports. This is a liability at SDCC, where chaos and confusion - and the sheer size of the show - often mean different perceptions and different experiences. So please share your corrections and knowledge in the comments as I'm going off what I'm told.

But here's the gist of it.

 

We all knew Saturday in Hall H would be a wild mess due to Marvel (and Apple, IMO.) Thursday night I began getting reports of the line forming, reported it on Twitter/X and was met with skepticism, confirmations, and anxiety. Then someone messaged me a story of a massive group of people cutting in line up front. Line cutters are a scourge at every event, but when a cloud of them descend like locusts, morale dies and hostility spikes. Especially since organized line cutters tend to be bullies.

 

To cut to the chase: when Saturday came around, not everyone with a wristband got in. Hours passed, they still weren't in. Many missed Marvel's 5:30 panel.  And CCI handled it poorly.

 

What apparently happened: staffers not checking wristbands closely and letting people walk in without wristbands or with counterfeit wristbands. 

 

Also, some people report that while they got attempted to get back in line before 7:30 am, they weren't allowed back in due to bottlenecks, staffers, etc.

 

The video footage of staffers talking to attendees is a PR nightmare. In the videos I saw, they were curt and detached, and implied attendees screwed up. I realize some were probably exhausted, but the choice to express contempt over empathy in their tone was awful.

 

Why is SDCC still in this place and why is CCI still unable to address it gracefully?

 

 

Hall H solutions

 

 

People always like to talk about Hall H and I've heard my share of solutions standing in line or in Gaslamp bars. The most popular 2 are:

1. Move it to Petco Park. 40,000 people vs. 6500 - sounds like a no-brainer. But where Hall H is a controlled, internal environment, where the dark makes it easy to spot people recording - there is no way to stop that entirely in a stadium. There's also the less-than-thrilling experience of watching footage in a sunny outdoor environment. It's just not as intimate. We'd also need so many more staffers.
2. Hold lotteries. Other events do it like D23 and the advantages are numerous. Imagine you can get into Marvel in Hall H without spending an entire day in line. But also imagine that you're going to Con solely for Hall H and you get shut out completely. Would the lotteries be held in time for badge refunds? Clearing the rooms between panels is also time consuming, although we could simply extend Hall H hours - from 9 am to 10 pm, say, and returning to Sunday panels. But now even lottery winners can only see 1 panel, unless they're lucky enough to win tickets to multiple panels.

 

There's also a hybrid model possible where we do 60/40 lottery and standby; people have proposed scannable wristbands. I really don't know the solution - I favor lotteries but as someone who doesn't do Hall H, I don't feel my perspective is an informed or important one.

 

We have had similar scandals and problems before. You can look back at the Deadpool and Wolverine disaster a few years ago where hundreds of legitimate lottery winners were stuck outside. While badges could have been scanned to confirm a winning Member ID, staff just waved people in if they showed a confirmation email - which of course could be faked, forwarded, or screenshotted. We had Funko disaster Preview Night with fake wristbands this year. Other stories abound.

 

It's time for SDCC and vendors to come up with smarter ideas. Humanity has learned to rewrite genetic code and map exoplanets - I think we can solve Hall H. If it means charging a little extra for a badge, so be it. People do not want to plan and spend $$$$ all year only to come to SDCC and get shut out. And CCI has to show some accountability and empathy to the attendees who got shafted.

 

The Talk Back session today is going to be extra salty. Probably they need to hold it in a bigger room and for an extended time. But is anything going to change? I'm guessing not.
