Registration Update - Important

21 FEBRUARY 2012

CCI has finally released some information on registration. It's cryptic, but this is what it says:

Comic-Con will release the badge sales date and time via email to everyone who has registered for a Member ID. Please check your e-mail frequently. Facebook, Twitter, and RSS announcements will come later. If you are not receiving notifications through SMS, you need to review your Facebook settings or contact Facebook directly. CCI does not send out announcements via SMS.

Due to the large number of Member ID accounts, it can take a few hours for our email notifications to go out in batches. If your friend or family member receives an email notification before you, please hang tight and be patient. Yours will arrive shortly. We are aware of this delay and have scheduled badge sales accordingly.
Because we hope to improve the efficiency and speed of the EPIC online registration system, we are requiring that anyone who wishes to purchase, apply, or register for Comic-Con badge must sign-up for their own personalized "Comic-Con Member ID".

Let's break this down. Notice they didn't say when they would release the badge sales date or how far in advance. That means we won't get much notice. Saying the emails will go out in batches, and that they've scheduled badge sales accordingly, is also vague; it could mean the badges won't go up for sale until all emails have been sent, or that badges will be sold in staggered batches.

The fact that they're saying Facebook, Twitter and RSS will come later is also suspicious, because posting the date and time there would be far simpler and faster than sending out the emails. Which probably means they're hoping for a staggered easy-on-the-servers response as everyone will be checking their email and hitting the registration site at different times.

If this is correct, and we won't get much advance notice, this will benefit those of us with smart phones and leave everyone else - especially people who might be stuck at jobs where they can't access email or computers - in the dust.

So now you know what to do: make sure the email address affiliated with your Member ID is on your phone. Make sure it's not a Yahoo or AOL address. And be very, very watchful.
